So. Which round to go with (6-47 Lapua or 6XC or 6.5 Creedmoor )

Not unreal Erik. figure the head is about 6" square. Good rest (prone) steady, I bet even you could hit a 6 inch circle at 700 yards?
At some point, the shooter becomes the limiting factor in accuracy! ;)

At some point, the shooter has to be responsible enough to ensure a humane kill.

So you are telling me that you would hit a 6" square on a cold bore shot 100% of the time?

I have shot a BOAT LOAD of deer. I have only shot a few in the head. WHY? Because if you miss the "brain portion" and hit in the mouth or throat, the animal will die a miserable death! Not only that but the "brain portion" is alot smaller than a 6" square! Then throw in head movement and you have the makings of a disaster.. Shoot for the "heart / lung" area and the animal will expire quickly... Make sure you use a bullet that exits and you will have a blood trail to follow>>> and at 500 plus yards, you will be following a blood trail!

no, but you didnt say 100 % of the time to begin with. If I'm shooting it i hold on the shoulder. more forgiving of a shot.

Why would 100% not be the norm for hunting? I can see some of you guys like to argue for the heck of it!

I've killed a ship load of deer and elk , just put it in the right place you will be eating meat for awhile. If your shooting 6" targets at 700yds it not too difficult from a bench or f class position, you got to admit that right?

It depends on the conditions. I would not bet money on 100% success rate though.

When I shoot F-Open at 600 yards, I am shooting at a 6" circle. I shoot "normally" about 593 and up.. That means with wind flags, spotters and sighters I hit inside 6" "most of the time".. I would NOT consider that "good" for shooting at a deer at any position other than a benchrest and in the heart / lung area>>>>even then, there are too many variables for 100 pct reliable kills... I just don't do it..

Not arguing Erick, just responding to your post.

well if we bet 10 bucks a shot at 700yds neither of us would beat the other by much.

Ben 593 is 98.8 % that aint bad

I usually shoot in the 99%+ at 600 yards, and I would still not attempt a head shot on a deer on a cold bore shot at 700 yards. No way!

Me either, not arguing that point. But 99% is dang good. I

Me either, not arguing that point. But 99% is dang good. I've guided guys on hunts who couldnt shoot a deer at 100yrds 50% of the time. LIke i said some are better than others

but I'd shoot at a coyote at 700yrds

So if you would shoot the coyote at 700 yards that that is somehow "okay" compared to wounding a deer? It is still a "game animal" whether it is considered a "Varmint" or "Big Game".. It is still worthy of a clean, humane kill..

Ben , who"s wounding a deer? Me? Coyote its a animal for sure ,but if you miss you miss. we can argue all the way down to mice some things you just don't care about.

by the way Ben how's your comp. shooting going this spring?

Well we have had some of the worst weather on record. January AND February's 1000 yard matches were called mostly due to wind. It was blowing so hard it was ripping the targets off the backboard. The TSRA match on Sunday was cancelled due to rain and mud. The 300 yard match was 30+mph wind. The wind was blowing the dust so strong that it looked like fog across the range. BUT in Beaumont at the 600 match, I shot a 599-36X and would have got a 600 but I bumped my 2oz trigger at an inopportune time and it went into the 9 ring by about 1/8th of an inch.. Our "Mid-Range" club championship finished up and I THINK (not positive) I came in 2nd.. So, it has been a mixed bag, as it were.. But as long as I am shooting, I am happy..

How about yours?? Do you shoot competitively? What discipline?

minimum for what you want to do i suggest 26" to 28" minimum contour rem sendero . If that is to much to pack around go shorter. if carry wieght dont matter go bigger like a 28" HV contour

#4 or 5 fluted. I made the mistake of getting a Sendero contour for a hunting rifle. Never again! If you can go 26" do it. You can always cutter later.
