So I had a bullet get stuck in the lands

I think hes using his own tool to measure which will be different than any other tool. It throws a measurement out there that only matters to his tool like a stoney point case gauge and a comparator on calipers

A fuzz short of 3 inches still seems like a base to tip measurement in a .243. A S/A 700 mag box length is 2.815 or so.

7.62x51 is 2.80 plus .03
my guess is magazine is close to 3 so his number is not impossible
i just did a savage 300 wsm that went over "spec" to the lands and the mag
had room for more.

My lil brother's savage 270 is like this

Is the Stony Point tool repeatable?
After I treated the chamber & barrel with JB Bore Paste & Bright the numbers are again repeatable.
There is Only one load I use that is too long for my magazine in the 243, and that's the 88 VLD Varmint Berger being near the lands. All of the other loads fit in the magazine and cycle smooth. I hardly ever record the OAL, only the reading the comparator gives me.

This seems a bit odd to me. The same problem in two different rifles tells me that it is not the rifle. It is something that you are doing. I have reloaded a lot of ammo over many years and never had any issue like that. Interesting.

I normally soak with wipe out accelerator and patch out liquids. Then use a stiff nylon brush. It’s odd that it happened to 2 different rifles. It could be operator error and not enough neck tension.

I just tried to use a $60 fiber optic used for autos that my brother has. No luck. i do have a buddy that has a hawk eye that i will ask him to take a look at it. A carbon ring is the only thing that makes any kind of sense so far. I always let the barrel cool between shots. No more than 3 at a time.
I thought wipeout would take care of the carbon. I guess it's time to use a different product for removing the carbon.

A nylon brush has no scrubbing power. If you have a carbon cleaner that won't cause rust leave it in the bore several days. It's expecting a lot for a cleaner to work when it's only in the bore for about 30 seconds. I gave up on my Stoney Point gauge. Seems like the case wouldn't seat in the chamber the same way every time. I now use the split case neck method. When I get a new barrel I determine the touch distance with about 5 different bullets after one trip to the range so there should be no carbon build up. Reverify about once a year. It's a varmint rifle.

Im open to any and all ideas. I am heading to the range now to see how things work out. I normally test both rifles at the same time and shoot similar amounts in each rifle, thereby possibly increasing carbon rings at the same rate. Im using H414 in both rigs. It gives outstanding accuracy, even tho it is temp sensitive.

The stripped bolt method is easy and repeatable. Finding touch length only takes a few minutes. The instructional video that Alex has on his website is quite good.
