So I Bought an Annual Range Membership

I took what is quite a plunge for me. At our last local gunshow, I got caught by the guys promoting membership at our Sportsmans Park. I've been going to the place occasionally and paying the $10 daily fee, but I decided to pony up $70, and hopefully take advantage of it.

Place is thirty miles from my house, Has pistol range, 200 yd rifle, 600 yd rifle, sporting clays, archery, RC plane field, overnight camping, off-road area,-- think that's about it.

I can still run "up the hill" two miles away to shoot a group, or test a load, but it's usually windy as Kansas, and I've got to take my portable bench. l think this will be a good thing, and I can probably pay for the membership fee just by the brass I can pick while there. (which is allowed) On weekdays, there's usually almost no one there, and it's got a pretty comfortable atmosphere. My groups will probably improve by 20% just from shooting off of concrete, and more friendly wind conditions than I'm used to. ;) jd

I bought a life membership at our local range about 20 years ago. It's not nearly as fancy as yours but it has trap, skeet, 5 stand, 2 pistol ranges, and rifle range (200 yd. Max) with covered benches.

CJ6 are you speaking of Caribou?

Going tomorrow to our range. Membership is STEEP but not many close by options.
Weekdays we are usually alone and owner will set up e-targets for us.
Shooting 22 Nosler, not much chance for range brass :(
Hope to see some more groups JD.
Maybe compare an SKS to your new AR.

I think I've shot ONE 1" group with an SKS (100 yds) -- in my life. I've already shot quite a few with the new AR.

Haven't shot the little thing for a couple weeks. I picked up an old school butt stock/buffer tube and spring I need to put on. I think it will be mofunner to shoot off bags with it. jd

Tho it's 30 miles from your home it definitely offers a lot for a $70.00 membership.
Ours is 12 miles from my house and it's 325 yard to the berm. We have a pistol range, a steel range, and paper. Plywood benches. A few other things. $300.00 a year.

We're in country where it isn't too hard to find open country to shoot. At this park, just the daily fee of 10 bucks is enough to keep a lot of folks from shooting there. Heck, I've always been one of those folks. That keeps these ranges from getting very crowded. The times I've been there, there has never been more than a few other folks there. The benches are concrete, and covered, and there are wood stoves for wintertime shooting. jd

$70.00 sounds pretty reasonable for what's offered. I too belong to a range, annual membership $50.00.
50, 75, 100, 200, and 300, yd Ranges, covered benches. A dedicated pistol range. lots of opportunity to shoot.

The range I belonged to went up over 200.00 a year, When I first joined you had to be vetted and sponsored, you had a key to the gate MEMBERS only... Mondays were GREAT all day shooting sunup to sundown maybe saw 4 other guys all day membership then was 2 days work detail and 50 per year which included lots of other stuff.... then it happened new president wanted to raise more money so opened to guest shooters on weekends then weekdays members still had priority to the benches, now its a free for all, think Jds neighborhood sounds like the place to be

I’m a member at two local ranges. One has a great indoor pistol range and the other has a 40 bench covered range. All benches are rock solid concrete. Both memberships come to about $20 a month when averaged out. I think it’s well worth it for the facilities. Trap, archery, etc also.

No one is ever at either of them unless there’s an event. Or it’s three days before deer season.

I can shoot 150 yards at home. With that being said the closest public range to me is over 35 miles from home. I shoot every week, at least once, sometimes more. I save enough money in fuel to pay for my membership at today's cost. Plus my G.C. offers longer distance, steel, and a manual skeet thrower you sit at. It's not the best, but I'm glad to have it.

Congratulations. That will be the best money you have ever spent and not much more than the cost of a tank of gas. Amenities alone is worth it and the range design is worth it. I don't know why this seemed to be a huge cost to you if you shoot at all. I belonged to many ranges and am a member at 3 ranges currently. When I started shooting over 58 yrs ago, there was no local club to go to. Now I can take advantage of ranges across the country and its the best deal in town,

The range I use is public, county owned, a great facility. Super trap, skeet area, ranges to 400+ yards and not many people during the week. It is about 70 miles each way, but it's a nice drive. I like to concentrate on my shooting, and not hear a bunch of political B.S. or "ain't it awful" talk. I want it to be a positive day. I'm able to drive to hang my target, I put up a few, labeled for each rifle, confusion still sneaks in. It is $100/year, but hopefully I'm contributing to making the facility better for others. I have a nice lunch, maybe see a few rock chucks and have a cold beer. It's always a good day.
