Smallest 100yrd 5 shot group

I didn`t look at all the posts, but anybody shooting any of those micro-groups with FACTORY ammo? I don`t hand load. My Savage 12 LRPV in .223 will shoot regular .5`s ( a few smaller ) with ADI 69grain SMK. Anybody shooting .223 with 7-9 twist should give them a try.

I would say No to the factory ammo. But lots of small groups have been shot with factory rifles and hand loads.

Factory ammo just isn't loaded anywhere as close as hand loading can do. To see what some some factory ammo was like, I've taken some .308 Federal Premium "match grade" ammo and pulled the apart weight the powder and measuring seating depths. Of a box of 20 I pulled 10 bullets and weighed the powder individually and they had an ES of over 1 gr. I poured all the powder from the 10 cases together, took the weight and divided by 10 and refilled the cases evenly like I would for my hand loads. Then I seated the bullets that were pulled to the same seating depth as was the average seating depth of the other 10 cartridges. The 10 factory cartridges just didn't shoot near as well as those I had reworked. I've done this twice, each years apart, and it was the same. . . factory cartridge just don't do as well as precision handloaded cartridges.

Basically, I used a factory RPR rifle, though it has a high end Krieger barrel. Put together a good custom built gun with good precision processed ammo and you're going to get "those micro-groups". . . unless you're just a really poor shooter. ;)

shot after the record target before my time limit was up at Rocky Road Jonesville, VA

30 BR
ABC HV Barrel 17.5 twist @ 24 inch
112 gr BIBs
N-130
And you can do it with a dirty barrel!
Ya just gotta love the 30 BR.
My last 2-200 yd groups this morning for Scotts postal match were a .4 and a .3, and that was with 20+
rounds down the pipe already. I put 5 leftover rds into a .139 on a score target sighter last year with 34 rds down the barrel and no cleaning.
Like I said I have a love affair with the 30!

I shoot factory ammo to get scopes on paper, or out of curiosity, or to just plink odd bits of ammo I’ve had for years. Kind of all seems to average 1/2 to 1 MOA, some being worse, some better. Seems like out of a box of 20-50 rounds, there’s likely a really good group lurking. Sometimes a couple.

I`m sure that`s probably true and completely agree that only through tailoring loads can you ever fully determine just how accurate a gun can be. I`ve resigned myself to the fact that I`ll never TRULY know just how accurate my Model 12 LRPV could be.
I believe factory rifles that are accurate with factory ammo will let you know. The key is seeing if it’s accurate in different conditions.

The conditions under which my Model 12 LRPV functions are pretty static. It`s my primary range gun and I shoot it essentially exclusively at 500 yards at 5 and 4" gong targets. I really think I don`t do it justice. I recently changed my bench support and I just wanted to verify my zero with my primary range load. Still dead on. When I miss, it ain`t my equipment! REALLY like the gun and scope combo I`m using, just wish I was a better shot!

Here is a classic. The aggregate came back smaller from the records committee than the range measurement. Set in 2003 with a .262 neck and Ultra 68 flat base bullets a .1518 at 300 yards. It’s stood for over 20 years now.

That’s insane! I've occasionally been able to shoot one group nearing that small at 300… can’t even fathom shooting that many in succession!

Shot this recently doing a small seating depth re-test. Rifle opened up to about a half-minute gun (5 shot groups), so I seated .010 out and shot the above test group.

Rifle:
FN SPR, rebarreled in 6.5x47L by Matt Stewart of Stewart Rifles. 26" Krieger, 1:8, M24. Scope has either been a Burris XTR III or Pro 5.5-30x56.

Load: 123gr Scenar over 35.5gr Varget. CCI-BR4, Lapua brass, 2.170 CBTO. Velocity is 2815 which is great considering how low a charge it is.

(Below) Back when I originally confirmed it at .010 shorter. Velocity says 2785...but when I trued it at 655, it was 30 FPS faster. It's an old Pro Chronograph.
