Small Rifle Primers

Weather and my free time has finally allowed me to get my savage 12V in 6mm Norma BR to the range in the near future. Have quite an assortment of bullets and powders to try but the only BR primers I can find locally are Remington 7.5's

How will these primers perform? Most of the loads will be 55-80 grain bullets.

Snowolfe: I've had excellent results with Rem 7 1/2 primers, and through the present "shortages", they always seem to be available, and at reasonable cost. Cups are .025" thick, unlike some others that are .019" and .0225", so chance of ruptures are less, I would think. At least I've never had one rupture. Have seen no adverse effect on group sizes with VV N133, N135 & Varget powders.

What Gerry and Frank say is correct. I use Rem 7½, CCI 450 and Fed 205M primers when the powder is a little difficult to ignite, notably H335 and WW 748. I use Wolf KVB-5.56M, CCI BR4 and CCI 400 with most stick powders. My experience is that the Rem 6½, Fed 200 and Wolf SR are either soft or thin and will not stand pressure. The most consistent loads in my Savage 12F 6BR are with Wolf KVB-5.56M.

I've experienced great sucess with MAGTECH 7 1/2 primers and CCI 450 primers with my sturdy .223 Remington loads. CCI 400 primers don't always like my sturdy loads. Pierced primers require thourogh cleaning of the dis-assembled bolt, or else expect firing-pin functioning problems. Carbon is our enemy. Cliffy

I've been wondering if anyone uses the Mag Tech 7.5's with good results.
I just tried some in a side by side Audette ladder test with 205M's in 204R.
The MT 7.5's were a huge disappointment. Excessive cratering and popped a primer at midpoint of book data. I had to abort the test with MT 7.5's and carry on with just the 205's.

From just that one test I would think they should be marketed as Mag Tech 6.5's.
