Small rifle primers---there is no substitute

I built a rifle a couple of months ago and in the course of working up a load for it I have just about gone through my supply of small rifle primers. It seems that these little primers are very popular right now because they are hard to locate.

I was curious to know if there was a substitute and began looking for information. I ran across this article in varmint hunter magazine and thought I would share it.

I would be interested in finding out how CCI m41 primers compare with either the CCI 450, or BR4.

It has been my understanding that CCI41 and CCi450 share the exact same cup and primer charge the difference is the anvil reducing primer sensitivity.

some of that info on that web page is wrong and has changed. The main thing is the CCI SP mag primes are the same as the SR primers. That is no longer the case. The SPM primers have changed the primer compound and is no longer the same as the SR primer. And the CCI SR primers are not supposed to be used in anything other than 22 hornet pressure loads in other cartridges that use the SR primer. Mags or 41 are what is supposed to be used in anything that makes pressure over 45K psi

GREAT LINK!
Just one more reason to wander here. Collectively, probably several thousand years of knowledge and experience stuffed into the minds of the members of one really great site.
Most of the info in that thread is wrong. But people keep re posting it

The Tula SRPM's stand up better than Fed or CCI's or Rem. in my 6PPC and other high psi loads I use.
I think it's because of the mild nature of the WOLF/Tula primer. I've been doing a head to head with WOLF SRM and CCI #41s over the last 3 weeks in .223 loads. CCI's goosed my velocities with 69gr OTMs 80 FPS on the same charge of H322.

I've been shooting Wolf SO LONG that messing with hot American primers completely derails my .223/5.56mm ammo approach.

That’s digging pretty hard for information when you go back in the archives 14 years!…. Still good info I guess

The main problem as I see it is that there are too many types of small rifle primers particularly in the CCI line...small rifle, small rifle magnum and CCI41 (magnums with a thicker cup.) It makes trying to keep things simple a bit harder. I use Winchester if I can find them.
