Small rifle primers---there is no substitute

The main problem as I see it is that there are too many types of small rifle primers particularly in the CCI line...small rifle, small rifle magnum and CCI41 (magnums with a thicker cup.) It makes trying to keep things simple a bit harder. I use Winchester if I can find them.

41’s do not have thicker cups than there magnum primers the 41’s are identical to the 450’s with the exception of the anvil

A guy I talk to on another forum told me the exact same thing. His girlfriend works on the line that makes the CCI 41s.

Last year when primers were very scarce I decided to try a test with different primers.

The thought was to find out if I ran out of my main primers how the other primers would effect my loads.

I had the following small rifle primers: CCI 41, CCI 400, CCI 450, Federal GM205M, Winchester WMSRL.

My load was: 40.6gr H4350, 105gr Hornady HPBT Match, Starline brass, 6mm CM.

Loaded up 7 rounds each primer and went to the 1000 yd range. The range has electronic targets that show the FPS at the target.

After I shot each 10 rounds I recorded the FPS and did a average. After all rounds were fired and recorded I noticed only 31 FPS difference between the different primers (High to low).

This low difference told me that I could sub out primers with out a big drop or gain in the velocities.

I've seen up to 80 FPS velocity swings in .223 ammo with a primer change out. This was with 69 gr OTM and the same H322 powder charge.

This was with WOLF SRM (very mild) and CCI 41 (very hot). CCI with the higher velocity obviously.
