small rifle magnum primers ?

Been loading and shooting for a long time,45 years. I always try different primers because primers do make a difference in accuracy. You will not know which primer works best with your rifle, powder, bullet, case combo until you give it a try. I shoot a lot of ARs. In 5.56/223 I have never had any problems with CCI 400s or any of the CCIs, WW, Rem 7 1/2, Wolf mag. Wish I could get Wolf/Tula again. In 6.5 Grendel in the AR I use CCI 450 or Rem. 7 1/2 exclusively because they handle pressure better. Only experience with slam fire I have ever had was with a M1 Garand with Federal 210 Match primers. I learned real quickly not to use ANY Federal primers in free floating firing pin rifles because of their sensitivity. I had a double fire in the first clip in the M1 and I thought it was just my trigger control causing it. Then the next clip I through I was firing a BAR with a three round burst. I was a young man just getting started loading and shooting the M1 and had not learned what one fellow at the range that day came running to me calling cease fire. First thing he ask was if I was using Federal primers in my loads? I said yes and he told me NEVER use Federal primers in the M1 and M14/M1A, the AR had not gotten popular as a target rifle at that time. Federal has come out with an AR friendly primer in the last couple years though.

Another primer that my local Sportsman's was carrying was the 205M-AR. I loaded up a bunch in my prairie dog loads. Did not shoot enough of them to get an opinion. Must have a harder cup, I would think.

Does anyone have any experience with using CCI #550 Magnum SPPs for 6 dasher?

NOTE: I know this thread is quite a few years old but looked for another that was relevant and newer but found nothing.

Even in a bolt action, the thicker cup will aid in handling higher pressure, without piercing, if you are working with loads near the maximum charge.
And they will reduce the chance of a hang fire with some of the types of powder.

Depends on the specific primer. Wolf SRMs have been great for me with extruded powders. My last case of CCI 41s have been horrible with stick and ball powder.

For extruded, I like the mildest primer I can run. (the Salazar approach). Gives me the best consistency in velocities. That's the beauty of the Wolf primer. Thick cup with mild output.

I am asking about using them in a bolt gun
The magnum primers, as others noted, handle pressure better with the thicker cups. In a bolt gun, that feature of the primers is used to advantage in getting higher velocities than might otherwise. How the SD's pan out using a particular primer, you can only try it. If you get great SD's with a regular primer and you don't push your loads - there is no benefit to you. The SD's are generally higher with less sensitive primers.

With small rifle primers I've always used the Rem.7-1/2 or CCI BR4, probably because that's what I have. Some powders can have a slight preference for one or the other, but I've never been able to predict which combo. Once I compared 7-1/2s with the Wolf SRM In a 22-204 and accuracy was about even....with that powder. The guy I shoot with uses only CCI 400 (because that's what he has) in everything, even an AR, and has never had any problems. And his rifles shoot very well.

Lake City uses magnum primers with all their 5.56 ammunition.

Small Rifle Standard

CCI 400 -thin .020" cup, not recommended for AR15 use by CCI/Speer. Good for .22 Hornet, .30 Carbine. See Note 1 at the bottom of the page

Primers recommended for use in .223 Rem/5.56 semiautomatic rifle loads:

CCI #41, 450, BR4
Federal 205, 205M
Remington 7 1/2 BR
Winchester WSR
Wolf/Tula SRM
Wolf/Tula SR223

NOTE 1: According to Speer/CCI Technical Services - Both the CCI 550 Small Pistol Magnum and CCI 400 Small Rifle primers are identical in size. Both primers use the same cup metal and share the same cup thickness. Both primers use the same primer compound formula and same amount of primer compound. They can be used interchangeably.

PLEASE, DO NOT SHOW THAT GENERIC DRAWING!!!! IT HAS BEEN PROVEN THAT THE CUP BASE AND WALL THICKNESS ARE NOT THE SAME AS SHOWN IN COLUMN "A" IN THE TABLE!!! THIS DRAWING NEEDS TO BE BANNED FROM ANY FORUMS!!!

THIS DRAWING CAUSED PROBLEMS IN A COUPLE OF OTHER THREADS!!!
