Small Primer Brass

There is another issue that I just discovered trying to size my once shot Peterson SRP brass in 6.5 CM. The flash hole is smaller, 1.5 mm (.059 in) vs that on their large rifle primer brass, and my Hornaday die set will not remove the primers. I'm going to contact Hornaday and hope they have a smaller primer punch. Otherwise I may have to try to reduce the diameter of my spare pin.

Edit to include ordering information. A call to Hornaday sales and a 1.5 mm pin is on the way under warranty.
The smaller decapping pin is not on the website, but they do have them.

I sent them back this morning. Total 9 cases. The ones with the black mark are the ones that will not hold a primer at all. The primer drops out just by tilting the case. The others were cases where I could insert the primer with my fingers. All in all, I wish to thank you for listening to my problem and responding so promptly. I am more that sure you will take care of this problem. Things happen, we correct them and move on. Again, thank you for your courtesy and attention.

Well kid, you weren't dreaming Peterson has issued a recall. I signed up for their news letter and found it when I checked my email. Another member has posted the notice.

They sent me some replacement brass but, I haven't messed with it yet. Have 2 new guns I'm trying to set up and mainly going around in circles. LOL

Dear Peterson Cartridge Customers,

A few days ago we were notified by one of our customers, who had purchased some of our 6.5 Creedmoor SRP (Small Rifle Primer) casings, that he found a few casings which had primer pockets which were roughly .020" larger in diameter than the maximum allowed by SAAMI spec. They were in Lot # W1TL0079, and the QC # is 012218.

First off, I take full responsibility for this issue, as I am the one who designs the tooling which makes the casings you all have come to enjoy, and trust the quality of. Second, we are committed to making everyone whole who finds any of these defective casings. We would like to hear from anyone who has purchased casings from us, and has found any with primer pockets which are oversized and will not hold a primer. For anyone who has found the defective casings, again we are deeply sorry for the inconvenience, and we are more than happy to pay for the casings to be shipped back to us. We will then inspect them and replace them for you free of charge. We will also cover the shipping for the replacement casings back to you. As one last show of good will from us, for your understanding with this issue, we will also provide any effected customers with a one-time-use promo code for 20% off your next order from us.

This issue was intermittent during that run, which is how it was able to slip by our inspectors who hand inspect, chamfer, and deburr your casings before they are packaged and shipped to you. As such, only a very small percentage of the casings produced in that particular Lot # and QC # suffer from this defect. Through our testing of this issue, we have found that the casings produced during that run have primer pockets which are either correct, or they are too large by roughly .020". So the bad casings are very easy to detect with a pin gauge of .1270" in diameter.

From all of us over here at Peterson Cartridge, myself especially, we are very sorry for any inconvenience this has caused you. We will continue to work to improve our product, as well as maintain the level of quality control you have come to expect from us. Please accept my sincerest apology for this quality problem which we have corrected.
