Small bore # 2

Retired shooter

Gold $$ Contributor
Along with my new build small bore, another 2 questions.
1. Since thinking about Bolt action. Who makes a good Bolt action for the smaller calibers? Good trigger assy. Really like my Diamond. Trigger tech.

2. Will be interested in a chassis style stock . Where to find it.? Sources of.?

Barrel will be some form, or style of Bartlein

Sorry for multiple questions. Not around the local gun range much when others are there, besides they aren't shooting what I am. When I can go to the ELR range it's maybe with my son if he can get a day off. I usually book the range for our own use. Local club range is only 600 yards, & when in use it closes off several others, so really not much testing availability.

Thanks to all.!

If you're budget minded, for small bore I really like the Howa Mini actions. They are short and slim and weigh very little. The Howa Hact trigger is pretty good too. With a couple spring changes, can get it to around 10-14oz. You will have to replace the "bottom metal" as factory is plastic, but there are several options for that. I am also a big fan of CZ 527 actions as well, I like the SST trigger, but they are discontinued and hard to find and expensive now.

I have also done builds on Savage Shorts and Rem 700 Shorts, but for small bore that is light and compact, I much prefer the Howa or CZ.

I have a SA Howa. The trigger is ok and can be made to work. But....aftermarket is limited. Barrel thread is metric so some smiths might not work on it. Action is not even as smooth as a Savage, and that isn't saying much. I bought mine (barreled action) because Brownell's was having a sale on them. Price for the barreled action was same as 700 action alone. The bolt is super simple to disassemble.

I went to Richard's Microfit for a stock. The fitting was near perfect with just a few spots to grind off (bold handle recess and inside magazine area.

I'd prefer a 700 action.

Savage all the way for a budget, it is really hard to beat them. Damn little for the action and pre-fit barrels are ubiquitous and inexpensive. The stock triggers are good. Lots of replacement options out there, and you can get it in all 4 set up's for bolt and ejection.
