Slowing It Down

Now let me state right off this is not a POLITICAL post, it is about a new business process.
In my close to 70 years on this earth I have always seen businesses trying to improve, speeding up delivery or services, trying to lower prices, over all just trying to please their customer base.
Now I see on the news last night that the Post Master has decided to slow down the mail and to charge more for all services in order to cut cost. Will someone please explain to me how taking 8-9 days to deliver a letter instead of 3-5 days is better service for the consumer. Also I believe they said that same letter will now need a .59 cent stamp instead of a 50 cent one, now that is where the "profit" comes from.
I wonder how big a work force reduction this will encompass to fill out his money saving plan.
Seems to me the postal service is going backwards.
I have always had good luck with very few complaints about the post office but now I don't know.

Well USPS is ruled by the government. Any changes in fees must be approved. We all no how well the government runs things. I will select my methods of delivery from this point forward when I can do so from businesses.

Covid plus online shopping with Amazon has burdened all shipping agencies beyond their capacity.
The postal service is also having a hard time replacing their ageing work force as attrition thins their ranks. They have job fairs, few potential workers show up.
I've had four business "next day" deliveries take two days in the past two months, two with UPS, two with FedEx. Neither gave reasons for the delay.
It's hitting everyone.
