SR would compete in Any Any/ Optic classes.
Most chose to use the Palma rifle all the way with irons for the Any Irons and any any matches to have one gun, one ammo no messing with swapping sights.

I have a 6 BRA set up for Irons and Optic that I shot in the 3x600 midrange and out of competition in the Warm up Palma match. It was a hoot and I don't have any issues swapping scope to irons. But If I sign up for the full agg next year, I would likely just shoot the Palma rifle all the way for simplicity.

No offense…. The is some confusion in this thread mixing NRA and CMP rule further mixing over the course Highpower long range prone. National level events often but not always include a Palma match. You don’t have to shoot optics in any event. You can win shooting irons only or with a Palma rifle. If you’re competing on a national level it pays to be good and or have equipment to play and know the rules. A Palma rifle meets all this. Or an Any/Iron gun as long as there isn’t a Palma stage as at most Regional matches. NRA and CMP both have iron days and a Palma day at there respective Nationals. The CMPs Palma is actually more restrictive following IFCRA rules. As Blair said a Palma rifle just won the NRA National Long Range. By the way I like shooting my Any/Any rifle. And my Palma rifle is about the easiest to load for. I like shooting it too.
Regards, Jack

What part of HP is shot kneeling? I have shot XC from 1989 till 2005 n never shot kneeling. That was part of three/ four position smallbore competitions.
At 75, shooting prone/ sling does not get any easier, but no less satisfying. Gravity makes getting down on the mat the easy part. Standing back up is the challenge. Fitting light Palma bbls , fixed power 1inch tube scopes, iron sights help keep rifle weight down. Lighter rifles are easier to hold up for a prone string of fire. It is the challenge of being a rifleman that makes prone/ sling shooting a worthwhile endeavor.
Bob, We can fire the 200 yd rapid fire stage sitting or kneeling in XTC. I for one will not , have not and never seen it done in my time since 2013 for Service Rifle course of fire. I learned in small bore with the good kids kneeling is not my game for position shooting.

I am a most often the Any Guy with a old rifle and a optic. Jeff (prior poster here) lends me Irons that he had on the rifle I now have IF I want to try them. I did once maybe twice. So much issue with the front sight and target shape with my vision that it is just a somewhat of a exercise in frustration. At CIHPRS matches at Camp Atterbury, I fire the MR/LR with a scope. Jeff offers me Irons, I usually say man I need help with a scope LOL let alone those funny match sights where the round bull turns into a C going the opposite direction so for me, I accept that I can place overall but I am unable to take a place medal or win.
I would love it if there was a glass only class but I accept that I am not using irons.

Not having to shoot irons in a sling match and still being eligible to win the overall is crappy. Yes, I understand that irons are harder and as you age, eyesight fades and makes it difficult to see your sight picture well, but that is life. No one expects someone in the late 60's and older to be at the top of any sport.
Palma is good just as it is.

Aging n shooting iron sights poses its issues. If u are over 60, u need to get checked for cataracts. New lenses can correct ur distance vision along with astigmatism.
I was having vision issues with a scope as well as irons. Not being able to keep the crosshairs in focus will certainly affect ur scores.
Getting good professional help for vision issues is where u start. It is not always the panacea for all issues but at least u know what the issue is and what direction u can take.

So, having read through this, some want all irons, others want optics, some just say its holding the rifle thats the hard part. 3 pages and I still don't know what you sling shooters want...

(Going to hide under my front rest now...)

Having had cataract surgery, I can tell you little fact that you obviously don't know. Once the lens is replaced, your eye no longer has the ability to focus. Using irons is no longer an option. You can either see the sights, or the target, not both.

Can you see both the reticle in a scope and the target after lens replacement?

I have had cataract surgery this year. The eye surgeons give you the option of distance lenses, or lenses that have a reader built in as well. I opted for distance only with astigmatism corrected . With a Palma rifle (long bbl) you can certainly see the sights and I can also see the target. The target is not the same target I saw when I was a young man of 60. That said, you don't need a target that is sharp and clear. A bit of a fuzzy target that is centered is more than enough.

What do the sling shooters want, prone sling should be a combo of irons and scope. You have to compete with both (or just shoot all irons) for the overall win. If you shoot all scope you are shooting in your own class and not eligible for the overall win. Palma is always irons only. Period.
