Sleeved Bolt

After a bolt has been sleeved what is used to get the sleeves on the opposite side of the lugs down to the same diameter as the bolt. The side that the lugs are on is bigger than the other side. What I'm thinking is that this is not done during the lathe part of turning the sleeves at the smaller diameter side.

so what are the methods of installing the sleeves? i see a method using a split bushing then 'JB Weld' them together.

another one i saw was using a full length cylinder bushing heating it up and slip over the bolt w/ the bolt handle removed.

i just don't see JB Weld as a good permanent solution, maybe silver soldering?

I just sleeved a bolt using force 44 silver solder from brownells. Tinned both the sleeves and the bolt before intallation and got a pretty good seamless job. I'm thinking of re-bluing the bolt and this setup should holdup to the salts. Unfortunettally I don't think JB will do the same

I have bolt sleeves that were JB'd on more than 25 years ago, fired thousands of times, and not one has come loose. Why would they?? Consider all the things that are glued together - cars, boats, airplanes - a little sleeve is nothing.

Cheechqako, I agree with your take on the sleeves. I had a Rem bolt done with split sleeves 15 years ago and I have shot the heck out of that rifle without any problems. Fixin' to have the same thing done.

hi guy I'm new to the board and from bush Alaska. I need to get a bolt sleeved from 222 rem and bolt opened up to 308 how is this done and is it spendy to have a good smith to do it. I also plan to buy a action wrench any one you guys like. kim

Yes its spendy for sure. Sell your bolt and get a Kiff bolt in the diameter you want.

I think we are talking two different things here.

Sleeving a bolt, as we are discussing in this thread, means fitting the outside dimension of the bolt body to the inside dimension of the bolt raceway. I think your question pertains to changing the bolt nose from 222 to 308 which is a different operation altogether.

Tightneck has suggested a solution which gets you both improvements in one.
