Skunks

A few years back we got invaded and over ran with skunks...prior to that you just about had to cross the river into Virginia to see one. I don't know where they all came from, but they are here now...all that said, the best way to deal with them is this: set a live trap and catch the thing. Walk up to the trapped skunk while hiding behind a tarp or blanket until you can cover the trap with the tarp. They don't see the tarp or blanket as danger so they wont spray. Spray starting fluid into the covered trap until he goes to sleep. Spray enough and he will not wake up. If he is still alive but sleeping from the spray and you shoot him he will involuntarily release scent and reek up the whole neighborhood. Believing he will "just magically go away" might work, but don't count on it. They have this bad habit of hanging around and showing up at the worst possible time. You could end up face to face and get sprayed if you don't get rid of him asap.
Forget tomato juice.....it does zero.

Remove the odor. Bottle of hydrogen peroxide from the pharmacy, 1/4 cup baking soda, 1 tablespoon liquid dish soap, mix and apply in spray bottle to area of smell. Wait a couple of minutes and wash. The offending agent is a mercaptan that is converted to an odorless disulfide.

Thanks. . . . Had a German shorthaired that grabbed a skunk by the tail once.. . . what a circus! A year later, when the dog got wet, you could still detect a whif of the odor.

I'm already in the LA Housecat Relocation program, take them all to "One of my Friends" house in TX. While intriguing, I'm not about to start the LA Polecat relocation program . . . .

If only it were that simple....I have one of those little Jack Daniels dogs, he thinks it's his job to kill every wild animal on the planet {good thing he only weighs 16 pounds, nothing would be safe!!}, believe me it is not for lack of trying, because he will try anything. He tried a skunk when he was about a year old...did a good job too, brought it too me in his mouth....of course he reeked. I knew tomato juice was a joke. This same formula is posted all over the web so I gave it a try, nothing to lose. It does work, but only partially....once washed off and dried the little dog reeked no more. I really thought I had something, and I did..until he got wet again. No B.S., for three months anytime the dog got wet he reeked like the day he got sprayed.

I have shot at least 50 in my life,I can't remember a single one that did not stink . I now live with them mostly...just had one so close to the house you could taste it in the heavy morning air. Dogs wanted out, bad.
