Site Needs .243/.243AI Loads & Comments

Re: Site Needs .243/.243AI Loads & Comments

Standard .243
Rem 700
87gr. V-Max (HBN)
45gr. H414
WLR Primer
Winchester case
3,050 from an 18.5" factory barrel.

This is a warm load in my rifle.
I tried coating the bullets with HBN, and needed to fire a group to check zero and see how it was working. The wind started to die down right at dusk. I rushed out, set up a target, and tried to shoot in the calm between the random gusts. This is a 4 shot group, guess which shot the wind caught. :) Overall group was around 1/2".

Re: Site Needs .243/.243AI Loads & Comments

26 inch mcgowen super heavy barrel 1-10 twist with tight neck and tight chamber on a custom 3 lug single shot bolt action. all testing was 100 yards unless noted. all loads are done using redding competition .243 bullet seating die and rcbs necking die. cases are winchester brass and have been anneled. cases are checked and sorted for weight and length. flash holes deburred and primer pockets uniformed.

h414 loads:

85 gr sierra hpbt gameking
43 gr h414
winchester large rifle primers
2.650 col
very accurate good pressure 1/4 moa

87 gr hornady v-max
43 gr h414
winchester larger rifle primers
2.730 col
good accuracy good pressure 1/2 moa

90 gr nosler spitzers
43 gr h414
wlr primers
2.740 col
good pressures, hard to keep 1 moa

75 gr sierra hpfb blitz
46 gr h414
wlr primers
2.647 col
great accuracy good pressure 1/4 moa

80 gr sierra spbt blitz
45 gr h414
wlr primers
2.700 col
great accuracy good pressure 1/4 moa

85 gr sierra hpbt gameking
44 gr h414
wlr primers
2.650 col
great accuracy good pressure 1/4 moa
shoots about 1/2 inch higher than 43 gr load

95 gr berger vld target
41 gr h414
cci br primers
2.885 col
good pressure bad accuracy. berger posts that bullets need tweeking. best average group i could get was 2 moa at 100. i will say these are way to long for my rifling. do not take this accuracy as a bad rep for berger. i use them in my 300 mag and they perform absolute the best. this bullet again is to long for my twist rate and was an experiment. this was posted to show the amount of powder i worked up to.

reloader 17 loads:

85 gr sierra hpbt gameking
46 gr rl 17
cci br primers
2.650 col
great accuracy good pressure 3/16 moa
this is my go load for accuracy

80 sierra sbt blitz
44 gr rl 17
cci br primers
2.700 col
great accuracy good pressure 1/4 moa

87 gr hornady v-max
44 gr rl 17
cci br primers
2.750 col
good accuracy good pressure 1/4 moa

75 gr sierra hpbt varminter
45 gr rl 17
cci br primers
2.640 col
great accuracy good pressure 1/4 moa

75 gr sierra hpbt varminter
46 gr rl 17
cci br primers
2.640 col
great accuracy good pressure 1/4 moa
this load shoots about 1/2 inch high at 100 yards

these are my "good" loads. i found imr 4895 to yield extreme pressures in my gun with suggested starting loads from the lyman book. most of, if not all, of the loads i have listed are above max powder weight suggested by lyman and hornady. i built the gun to be almost indestructable and wouldn't recommend pushing as high as i have. my good pressure sign is a good primer indent and minimal case stretch. i hope this helps!

Re: Site Needs .243/.243AI Loads & Comments

I fireformed 100 243 cases yesterday using the cream of wheat method and it worked great. I used 10 grains of Unique topped off by cream of wheat held in place with a piece of tissue. Each and every case completely formed. I did find that a number of them had burnt cream of wheat stuck in the shoulder body junction and in some cases this was thick. I had to use a pick to remove it. I tried tumbling and ultrasonic cleaner but there was still some in the case. Just wanted to pass that along. Enough of it could cause problems such as high pressures if not removed.

Re: Site Needs .243/.243AI Loads & Comments

Savage model 12bvss 26 inch factory fluted stainless 243 win. Favorite long range load due to twist considerations (9.25 twist). Is a 95 grain Berger hunting or target VLD jammed into the lands .010" Using Winchester brass CCI BR2 primers and H4350 at 41.9 grains. Which chronos at 3050fps average. with low sd and es. Groups average 3/8 or less at 200 yards for five shots. As well as under an inch at 500 and 3 inches at 1000 in no wind conditions. I have tried lots of different seating depths and powders but H4350 and .010 jam works lights out. But my gun will shoot very well with almost any powder as long as its jammed .010" I use this combo to shoot golfballs on strings at 500 yards at my friends range for fun. This load makes it easy. Matt

Re: Site Needs .243/.243AI Loads & Comments

Greeting from the UK
My first post here - can anyone help please
I have just purchased some .243 63 grain Barnes varmint grenade bullets and I am having trouble finding a suitable load .
The problem is that I only have a European powder (Vit N160) which is good for my normal 85 grain - but US made powders are getting a bit thin on the ground here
Can anyone help me or will I have to put my hand in my pocket !
Thanks
Ed

Re: Site Needs .243/.243AI Loads & Comments

Ed, What barrel length are you using? My data says about 47.7 grains or 3.09 grams with a slightly heavier bullet and N160. If you know your case capacity and preferred seating depth I can adjust for that...
