sinclair bullet comparitor

I don't know what I'm missing on this. I've purchased two Sinclair 24 cal bullet comparitors in the past with the intention to check throat growth as the rounds count goes up. Both I have purchased slip right over the bullets missing the bearing surface. I'm back to the hornandy which measures more to the front of bearing surface towards the ogive. I know this is just a reference as the hornandy does show my normal growth but I'm trying trying to find a comparator that will measure more close to the bearing surface for throat erosion and seating depth. Heck might be another good tool to sort bullets as it does just slip over the bullets I'm running. 105 hybrids and the 105 VLD both. Bill

Tagging in for educational purposes. Can you post a pic. A visual aid would definetly help me. I have two sinclairs, one for calipers and one on a spring loaded stand.

Hey chris, Dunno, I keep a dummy round on a new barrel that I set at jam and use the king tool to check on bearing surface as well to chase growth and sort loaded rounds. Bill

I just use my stony point and have the number wrote down. I shoot with them in the lands so it is easy to know how far throat has moved by keeping the same marks on the bullet and measuring. Then all you got to do is look at your old numbers. Matt

Sounds to me that somebody goofed on making the 24 Sinclair or they sent the wrong one. Is the Sinclair like the stoney point where you attach to calipers and have an aluminum bushing to bear on the ogive?

Sinclair's tool zeros out at 1.100" instead of 1.000, but does fit onto the s.p. base. It does grab further down the bullet, and actually has some taper to it. It really don't matter as long as you use the same tool, with all your notes from the start. No two are identical either, by either company, so if you do use them for bullet sorting, make sure to mark witch one measures the ogive.

Sinclair do taper to give you better accuracy and consistency so it will go further into the comparator a better tool in my opinion

I agree it's a better tool, stn. stl. vs. alum......but he claims the bullets ( 2 different weights) pass right through........."it slips right over the bullets". I am also puzzled as to why someone would purchase duplicate comparators.
Sinclair offers two types of Sinclair Brand "bullet comparators".....one is designed to be used with a calipers ( ala Stoney Point (Hornady), the other is to be used with a gauge block and dial indicator. I believe you purchased the latter, when you really wanted the Stoney Point type.

I would call Sinclair. They will get it straight for you. Take a look in their catalog at the Davidson pieces that attach to a caliper. I use the nose piece all the time and get accurate measurements to the ogive. I also have the Hornady comparator, but prefer the Davidson.

Just to note, but there have been undersized bullets leaving the factories. Measure your bullet diameters.
