? Freebore in 6BRA

I’m using a .104”fb at the moment in my 6BRA which is fine for the Berger 105 VLDs,Hybrids and Sierra 107s. For my next Barrel I will be trying the 6mm 103gn Copperhead bullets which are a custom bullet made here in OZ, they are hand swaged in Neimi Carbide Dies which I believe are the same dies or very similar to the ones used for the Vaportrails in the US. The Copperhead bullets have a shorter bearing surface therefor less of the bearing surface is in the neck, theres Still plenty of bearing surface in the neck for them to shoot well I believe. But am curious to hear if anyone using Vaportrails or Copperheads has gone with a shorter fb, say about .060” or less which would put the bullet closer to the neck/shoulder junction and have you seen any differences in accuracy??

Cheers Rushty

Hi Rushty, Ken Melgaard may be able to offer you some advice regarding the freebore, he's always happy to talk when you can get a hold of him. I have a friend running a 6 Dasher who uses the 103gr Copperheads but alas I can't tell you what freebore he went with. Again though, I'd try calling Ken as he will definitely point you in the right direction here. I'm going to look at trying his new 112gr bullets in a 6XC (standard spec reamer) later in the year.

Gday Willow, I spoke with Ken when I purchased his bullets.. he was very helpful and assured me the fb would be fine, I don’t doubt they will shoot in my .104fb as they’ve done very well for a lot of people at top levels here..
I was toying with the idea of ordering another reamer in the future possibly with a shorter fb to suit Kens Copperheads and am curious to hear if anyone else may have gone down the shorter fb path.. Although I have a feeling there will be no gains with a shorter fb..

Cheers Rushty

.100" fb seems a good place, it works right up to the 110 SMK's. One of the things I like about the 6BRA is it gives us is the long neck to make small differences in FB largely irrelevent.
