Simple Jag Question

what size Jag's work with a 6mm barrel? I am guessing the one labeled .243/6mm would be the correct one to buy, but obviously if it is .243OD its going be tight in the barrel without a patch. Also, I have read about getting a jag thats a little looser and one thats tighter to apply different liquids. Please inform me, thanks!

Matt,
I have never heard of different size jags. But i guess they could be out there. I have heard of different size patches. I think Dewey makes a Parker hale jag for use on the Dewey rods.
Using a hale jag and different patches will be tight enough or loose enough for what you may want.

.22 seems like the next size down.. i will take your advice jb..

Ahh.. well that is my mistake, some of the jags dont have the OD in the tech specs, turns out the one I posted does! I am going to take it the other ones that are a bit nicer, that dont have OD in tech specs) are the same. I think this fully answers my question, unless any DOES use a different size for a tighter/looser fit for different liquids. Thanks!

I have a bunch of different jags. Their diameters vary within any particular caliber. For my 6PPC I use a Sinclair female threaded .22 cal. piercing style jag with 1 3/8 square patches. I am always amazed to see folks pushing tight patches. All that a tight fit does is squeeze solvent out of the patch at the front of the chamber. It is the chemical reaction that does the work when patching, unless you use an abrasive, and for those I use a Parker Hale style jag. What I want for solvent is as loose a fit as I can get and not have the patch come off if I reverse the rod. Another reason that I use a female threaded Sinclair jag is that it is a perfect match to the Dewey .22 cal. rod, leaving no lip to catch on the muzzle on the return stroke. After a few wet patches, I get so much solvent in the bore that if I use a quick stroke when drying the bore, solvent will shoot out the muzzle. Stay away from tight patches and bowed rods.

Matt,
I suggest getting a good bore guide and rod. The dewey rods are good. As for bore guides i suggest Lucas guides.

I don't use TM Solution solvent. Just haven't gotten around to it. I have never had any problem with the Dewey coating with the many solvents that I have tried. I guess that if I want to try the TM solvent,, I will have to get a stainless rod, probably a Pro-shot. I have had excellent service from my Dewey rod. To my knowledge, the brand that has had a history of coating problems, is Bore Tech, although mine have not had any solvent related problems. I wipe them off immediately after removing them from the barrel, and don't use anything more exotic than BBS, Wipeout or Patchout. One more thing, a few years ago, Dewey upgraded their handle bearings. My old rod was in good shape, so I ordered a new handle and am still using the rod, with the coating intact. Years ago, I changed over to the Dewey from a Parker Hale, after noticing that the then new "Marksman's Choice" solvent (later changed to Shooters Choice, was dissolving the PH coating. To my knowledge, nylon is the most durable rod coating available.
