Sightron s3 mirage ring.

Is this a device that reduces the optical opening?
Used to do the same thing on large telescopes when viewing lunar or other bright images in the night sky. Not hard to make if you are handy. We called it stopping down the telescope. Basically the same as reducing the f stop on a camera lens.

It's easy to make your own. Use a rubber cap for the objective lens and drill a hole in the middle that measures 1.67 inch in diameter. If my calculations are correct, that aperture will increase the F-stop by 1, reducing the light by 50%. That will increase the depth of field quite a bit and supposedly catch more mirage.
Oh, and make sure you remove the cap from the objective before you start drilling.
