Sierra Sierra Ah Sierra !!!!

What gives?? I, along with others who shoot long range have asked Sierra numerous times "Where are your 107 grain 6mm bullets?" I am sure that the staff at Sierra is getting sick and tired to the same question. But none of us have been given any type of decent response. These bullets have not been available for over a year!! You can just see their "Deer in headlight" looks over the phone. So the question is "Why doesn't Sierra cater to the 6mm shooters any more?" My opinion is that Sierra is loosing a whole bunch of business to companies like Berger. And this does have a long term effect. Even if we just get one or two boxes by some miraculous stroke, what happens then. Will we be able to get more 107 MK Sierra bullets. Why develop a load when you can not get any more bullets? Lot of questions with NO answers! At least give us an answer. If you are not going to produce them anymore - then just tell us, instead of trying to pump sunshine up out butts!

A month or so ago, I called the Bulletsmiths at Sierra and told the guy that answered I wanted to know when they were going to be producing the 107s. He told me he didn't know, and this time I just didn't want a nebulous answer, so I kept pressing. Finally, he said if you will hold, I'll go check in the office. I held, and when he came back he said I don't know if you can rely on this answer or if it is what you want to hear, but "They think they might make a run of 107s in the late fall." I got lucky later and found a stash of about 1300 bullets that will hold me that long, but I have been searching for some good hand swaged bullets, and everybody is waiting on J4 for jackets. It doesn't look good to me unless you want to shoot Berger.

G: What other choice do we have. Thank goodness Berger makes a half way decent bullet and are somewhat available.

I think the problem with all bullet companies is that on this site its mostly talk about target bullets and they are selling and producing hunting bullets to keep up with loaded ammunition.

It does sound like many of us LR-BR shooters have just become too frustrated to ever go back to Sierra for their bullets. That is ashame, because of the excellent product they used to have. And another thing, no one can tell me that many of our bullets are being sold to government entities. Sorry for bitching so loud and long!!

Since just about everything has been covered except for the one most obvious, at least to me. And that's the demand has outdone the supply. It strikes me that we now have more target shooters and folks using the 105 - 107's than ever before. And I'm not here to defend Sierra in the least. But when they are producing as much as they can and more folks or even the military buy everything up, PLUS the pecking order for customers (which like it or not does exist with the barrel companies, not to even mention the shenanigans of the clowns in Washington) there just isn't much left to buy. So like it or not, you may have to start going to another bullet manufacturer as Sierra may just not to be any longer, to meet the demand no matter the reasoning. This same shortage issue seems to be pretty consistent across the board within reloading in general and is not limited to Sierra alone. Even Berger is now starting to back up on orders for certain bullets weights (my order from a week ago is now backed up until July 2) and cannot even keep up with the demand, although they aren't nearly as bad as Sierra. Its partially because people are also buying more bullets, even in the hundred per pack boxes simply because they don't want to be short as they've found what their rifles REALLY like. Reality some times SUCKS no matter how hard we try to combat and circumvent it.

I don think that in the grand scheme of things that the heavy for caliber target bullets like the 107's are near the top of Sierra's demand chain right now. It seems like a lot of shooters use this type of bullets to us, but I think that's mainly because we are somewhat isolated in the type of shooters we are talking to. It only makes sense for Sierra to make what there is the highest demand for, since they can't possibly satisfy everyone's needs at this time. It wouldn't make a lot of sense for them to increase production capacity, as the initial investment would most likely not pan out when this buying frenzy finally dies down. They just have to try to keep as many customers happy as they can, even if it isn't us.

That said, I have 2 or 3 500-ct boxes of 107's that I am not currently shooting as my 2 current 6mms both prefer the Berger Hybrids. The 107's are not for sale, but I'd trade them for 105 hybrids if anyone needs them.

Re: Sierra Sierra - go Berger

I recently put a 6 BR together and went hunting for bullets. My LGS has a 6 DX and settled on 105 Gr Berger hybrids for his own rig. He has a large stock of them and sold me some. Can't find any target bullets of any weight of Sierra, Nosler and had not gone after Lapua yet. But my search sort of ended right where it began. I am driving towards groups less then 0.3 and getting to 0.2 I have only begun with less than 60 rounds of the Bergers shot out of my new barrel. I expect good things from my rig but I am satisfied with the bullet part.

I've long questioned Sierra's lack of effort in keeping up with the times when it comes to LR bullet design. Sure, their S142MK is still a good bullet in the 6.5mm diameter, and the older 6mm 107s were also excellent. But the only recent design update I'm aware of was when they came out with the #2156 Palma bullet - and that was probably only because they'd lost a huge amount of market share after Berger & Lapua started selling 155gr 30 cal bullets that totally out-classed their old #2155.

I get the point of view that those of us who shoot more LR than point-blank are a minority, and Hornady's decision last year to temporarily stop production of several of their very popular A-Max bullets certainly seems to support that point. But I still wonder if the mainstream bullet makers haven't mid-read the market to a degree in that respect.

FYI; according to Sierra, a very limited portion of there sales are dedicated for .gov contracts.

This^

I wish we would see something from them, I think they are a great mfg and quaility to me has been above Berger since Stecker took over there. But other than the Palma and I think a new Black Hills only tipped 308 I haven't seen anything. It's the same old bullets for what 10+ years now. I'd just really like to see something in the long range hunting come from them, especially given their quality of product.

Given the "wolf-pack" mentality of some of the people buying re-loading components is it any wonder that Berger is starting to fall behind in their orders? If you buy up all the other manufacturer's supply and there are only one or two companies with any thing left OF COURSE THEY ARE GOING TO RUN OUT. JMHO

Sierra Military orders?
. Can't make enough, even stopped selling jackets.
I could make some 105 gr bullets if I had the jackets forget Berger Ceran they are' too busy making hunting bullets.
Both great companies but BIG orders come first, and same with the powder and reloading supplies.
Hoarding yes to some degree if hoarding is buying enough , so you don't run out. you never know when more will be available.
Same deal with 22 rf ammos.
Sierra and berger don't care about selling jackets to some of us , we could fill gaps in the market until things get normal again.
Its Selfish people running some business are keeping the supply tight. IT stinks'''
