Sierra Match kings?

Are Sierra match kings considered a vld bullet? Do treat as such when it come to bullet seating? How do they respond to jumps? Do i tune them like berger bullet? What have most of you found ie do they like jump or jam or is it mixed and depend mostly on the barrel

Some Sierra MK bullets do have a secant ogive like Berger VLDs. An example is the 6.5mm 150g MK. Many of their MK series are conventional, tangent ogive. I've never found a problem tuning any secant ogive bullet by jumping.

I've used SMK's almost exclusively in my .308 and some with my 6.5 PRC and all that I've used do fine with various jumps. Jumps aren't important to me as I focus on seating getting an effective seating depth. I particularly like Sierra's new 169 MK for my .308 and their 142 MK for the PRC (though I like Berger hybrids better for the PRC).

I shoot the Serria bullets that you would consider VLD...224 95 gr 224 Valkyrie 6.5 twist, the 6mm 110 gr, in 6 Dasher, the 150 gr 6.5 gr in Creedmoor, and the 200 gr 715 BC in 308 Win 9 & 8 twist. They are all accurate capable of high speeds, and don't blow up with fast barrel twists... and I don’t jam any of them...but I quit doing that like 30 years ago...(when that proceedure filled the chamber with gunpowder on a Varmint hunt when I had to unload the cartridge) with the Precision Shooting magazine days for bench guys to "soft seat" the bullets, now ya "jam" them. I'm always. 006 to .020 back, and sometimes much more, it meets my accuracy needs with all rifle I own. I often wonder how consistent is the average jam is, with all the variables of neck tension, neck consistency, hardness, in diameter, out of round high spots, low spots, taper, neck spring back, and diameter of each bullet...but if it works for you, jam away...just not my cup of tea...anymore.

Traditionally, most Sierra HPBTs were true tangent ogive designs with short 7 to 9 calibre radius nose sections - the original 155gn Palma Match (#2155), 168, 175gn, 180, 190, 200 (older model) 220 etc 308s for instance.

Recent modifications and introductions vary widely with some true VLDs and many intermediate designs. An exception is the range of fairly recently introduced heavy-for-calibre MKs such as the 183gn 7mm which appear to be scaled versions of a single design and are 'uber-VLDs' with the longest radius noses of any commonly available bullets. The 183gn 7mm SMK has a 27.84-cals radius nose section and Rt/R value of 0.37 (Bryan Litz figures) for instance. On other Sierra ranges such as the TMKs, there is no standard form, every model being different, but with a tendency to longer noses moving from tangent to secant designs.

Littlebit OT: Has there been 185gr .30 Match King?
My friend has been trying to sell me 185gr SMK:s but I have said all the time him that those don't exist

Only Lapua and Berger for 185gn thirties of the larger manufacturers. Maybe JLK too at one time??

Lapua has an FMJRBT D-series bullet as well as the HPBT Scenar in the weight, both long predating Berger's model. (The D46 FMJBT can trace its origins back to the 1920s when Lapua initially developed it for long-range use in 7.62X53R machine-guns.)

I shoot 107s. Most barrels between touch and .007 into lands. One barrel .003 jump, several barrels hard jam, as much as a square mark. I start at a square mark and back out .003 at a time. If I had to pick a spot and could do no load development it would be either touch or a square mark. I had a barrel, about 5 years ago that shot thru the wind, I guess you could call it a hummer. It was at a square mark.

Thanks Bulletman and Laurie.
Laurie, I'm shooting lot of those D46 bullets, actually was lucky to find old 11g D46 bag, 1000pcs. And price was just ridiculous, only 100€

Good on you! Much underrated bullets, even if not in quite the same class as Berger 185 Juggernauts. We can still get them in the UK too at good prices, albeit not at your price! The late, great German Salazar was a fan of this model IIRC in 30-06 match rifles.
