Sierra Bullet Description Q

Sorry but this really just struck me. I'm about to take the plunge into the 6mm Br hole, and while looking for some bullets to get started, I stumbled on the Sierra 107's and clicked on the description. This just struck me on the wording, and who they contracte to do this write up....

I know what they are trying to say, but the highlighted text sort of says. "Great for long range accuracy, BUT if you really want to hit the target only shoot at short range"????

Since its introduction several years ago the 107 grain HPBT MatchKing bullet #1570 has been used successfully in a variety of competitive disciplines. It has set new records and won national championships in such diverse competitions as National Match High Power and Silhouette. These competitions all have at least one requirement in common: extreme accuracy at long range. - Although they are recognized around the world for record-setting accuracy MatchKing bullets are not recommended for hunting. Widely favored for their extreme accuracy these bullets have been used for short-range varminting. Having heavier jackets they will not provide the explosive expansion of the lightly jacketed Hornet or Blitz bullets at equivalent velocities in small varmints. If used for varmint shooting ranges should be kept short to ensure precise shot placement. - Please Note!! This bullet requires a 1x7 to 1x8 twist barrel. - Dia. (inches): 0.243 - Weight (grains): 107 - Sectional Density: .259 - Ballistic Coefficients and Velocity Ranges: .547 @ 2500 fps and above .542 between 1800 and 2500 fps .529 between 1600 and 1800 fps .519 @ 1600 fps and below.

All that being said, I'm really trying to decide on the Berger 105 Hybrids, or the Lapua Scenar L 105's. My game here will be 600 Benchrest. Maybe if the bug hits I'll try it at 1k, but I have a 284 for that.

I really see it as Sierra is being honest with you as a consumer…… this is a “match” bullet, don’t expect great “terminal” performances on game…… or shoot the prairie dog in the head to guarantee a kill.

The distance thing has to do with using the bullet for an other-than-intended purpose: hunting (which requires a round designed for terminal ballistics) vs target (where the bullet just needs to hit where you want.)

They are not saying that the bullet is less accurate at long range, rather that more precision is required for hunting due to the poorer terminal ballistics from using a target vs a hunting bullet.

That Sierra 107 is a great bullet. I run that bullet in one of my 6XCs and it just drives tacks. All depends what your barrel prefers. I have a safe full of 6s and they all run a different bullet. The one they shoot the best. Most are running the 105 Hybrids but I have a GT that loves the 109s and my wifes Dasher loves the 108s. Feed em what they like.

I’ve always found Sierra’s written information very easy to comprehend. This information is no different.

When u sort n point the 107 SMKs , they shoot as well as anything I have tried in my BRX.
The Lapua’s are good out to 600 yds but lack BC for 1000.
Berger 105 Hybrids are excellent but don’t shoot any better than the Sierras once sorted n pointed.

What they are saying is
If you want to kill stuff, you need expansion
and they will only expand when driven at a certain velocity
Which means, they will only expand "Reliably"....at shorter ranges.
They are still accurate at longer ranges, accurate to a Mile even
although terminal performance may be questionable.
---Great Bullet--- I think the Lapua 105 Scenar L is touch above them though in consistency if you want to be in the 105-107 range
I would avoid Hornady anything
---------------------------------------------
I have no experience with the Berger 105 to compare with the Scenars because I like the 115 DTACS
I only bought some Scenars when DTACS were out of stock
and was very freakin impressed with the Lapua 105's at 600 yards
--------------------------------------------
Although 600 is more of a warm up/practice distance for me so I use the DTACS for 1000 and beyond.
Lapuas and Sierras for 600

I agree with your thoughts on the DTACS. Never had a bad lot and they always shoot. I will say that, for me, they require a case bigger than a BR to use them to the fullest extent at 1K. The 243 case is where the DTAC really shines. You have enough boiler room to drive them fast enough to really be effective in the wind at 1K.
The 6XC will get u good performance but at the cost of your brass. You really need to push the XC to make the DTAC perform. That is why I transitioned to the 243 SLR.

I would agree with this
The 115 anything is kind of a "Heavy" 6mm bullet
Therefore, I use a 6x284
Plenty of steam to drive the bullet to it's full potential and velocity.
-------------
But then again I've not tested them in a 6BR sized case
There is always a point where going heavier may reap High BC's but also slows it down too much to benefit..
For 6BR sized stuff, maybe 105-107 range is more suiteable
