Sierra 183 gr load info

Anybody have any experience with Sierra Matchking 183gr for a straight .284? For some reason my manuals don't have that heavier gr bullet listed.

I'm curious about powder and brass.

For powder I hear these H4350, H 4831SC and RL-17.

It seams like I can buy expensive Lapua brass or neck up 6.5x284 which I have never done anything like that before. What do you guys do?

My goal is to shoot around 500-600 yards for now and go out to 1000 when I'm comfortable. So I'm basically just looking for a decent load to start with and then go form there.

Thanks in advance

H4350 and 4831 work well, never tried rl17, br2 for primers. Chambers, barrels, barrel length makes a difference. Start low and work your way up.

Am I asking silly questions here, is that why no one is chiming in?

I did read back a few pages in the forum for similar questions, although I did find some relevant info it wasn't quite what I was looking for.

I don't load 7mm but I think the .284 Winchester is a very good but overlooked cartridge. It has about a 66 grain case capacity which is moderate for a 7mm. It is almost identical to the 280 Remington which has 67 grains, and not too far under the 7x64 which has 69 grains.

The issue with the 183 grain Sierra is that it new bullet introduced in 2015. I found a copy of Sierra's load data for the .284, but it must be older and they don't list bullets greater than 168 grains. The other issue is that this looks like a really long bullet, and it needs a minimum twist of 1 in 8". Make sure your gun has that. And if it is a short action gun, you are going to have to seat it really deep in the case or single feed it.

In any case, what I would do with lots of caution is look at the loads for 175 grain bullets and realize they have to be reduced for a 183 grain. You could look at 280 Remington and 7x64, but use even more caution as their cases are a bit bigger. And Berger make a 180 grain bullet, and if you write an e-mail to them you could ask for 284 Win load data for their bullet. It would be close enough. The heavier the bullet, the less powder you need of course.

For brass I would neck up the Lapua 6.5x284. Seems silly to have to neck up a former wildcat to make a standard cartridge, but that is one of your few good choices. I think Norma/Nosler is overpriced, and Lapua is your better value. Necking up is very simple. Just size the brass with your .284 die and be careful as it goes over the expander ball. You should lubricate the inside of the neck first with sizing lube, and clean it off after. For maximum brass life, anneal the neck and shoulder every 5 reloads.

For powder, I think my pick would be H4831 or Vihtavuori N165. On powder amounts, getting some advice from someone that has Quickload would be helpful. BR2 primers should be fine.

Hope that helps some,

I been loading 284 lapua for years, I would use a 1/9 Barrle with 180 lapua or 180 Berger H, neck up 6.5x284 lapua vit 160 or reload 17 work well 2850fps and wolf ( kv7) primers or the very expensive br2
Just shot a new G.B. F.class 900yd record with it (100.17v )
Most 284 guys use 180bullets over here
good luck.

I did a quick comparison between four 7mm bullets. 177.5 Carturucio, 180 Berger hybrid, 180 JLK and 183 SMK.
I have attached a picture of the bullets in the order stated from left to right, as well as the data. All four bullets preform well from a 1-9 twist at 1,190 ASL.
I hope this helps,
