Shouldered savage barrel

I have a savage 12 precision target action I am thinking of re barreling and just going shouldered this time. I know the standard barrel shank is 1.250 and savage barrel tennon is 1.125, would the 62 thousands be enough shoulder or should I wait foe a bigger custom diameter from barrel maker. I know guys have done it but I never have tried it.

My 6.5X47 Lapua, built on a Savage PTA has, 1300 rounds thru it and it has a shouldered Pacnor medium Palma barrel on it with no problems.

1.250 is a pretty standard shoulder. Good to go.

I have 3 Savage PTA's of which 2 are shouldered at 1.250"
I'd advise getting the thicker and ground lug from NSS.

Why?
Accuracy is no better, it will usually take longer to get, not resalable, and you need a gun smith to thread it.
That said I did two of them, strictly for BR, and no I can not measure the difference on the target. They just cost me more.
Unless you have a lathe and thread them yourself stick with the prefits, cheaper and you can re sell them.
There is a thread in this section where a accomplished BR shooter took a barrel and did it both shouldered and then nutted it made no difference on the target.

If you go shouldered, you just lost the DIY feature. AND, there's that G smith involved. Whatever blows your hair back or floats your boat.

1.250 shank diameter worked well on both Savages I had set up with shouldered barrels.

Make sure to face off the front of reciever to make it flat when doing a shouldered barrel.

Is there any fuglyness on the stocks barrel channel where it fit around the nut if you go back with a shouldered barrel?

If you go shouldered, you just lost the DIY feature. AND, there's that G smith involved.

A shooter can still have a shoulder barrel and switch them out. After it's shoulder, you won't need headspace gauges since it's already setup. It does cost a little more for a shoulder barrel than a non shoulder. I have a Remington 700 setup for a shoulder 20 VT and a Remage setup in 223. Both are very accurate. Takes a few minutes longer to setup the Remage since headspace gauges are used.

No headspace checking, faster barrel swaps and consistent point of impact compared to barrel nut setups.

That could be because You are spinning higher quality barrels than the drop ins You were using. Yes…No ??

No because I’ve had some fantastic prefits.

Shouldered barrel is just more consistent and faster when swapping them.

Go back and read my post. I said unless he can do his own threading he will save by buying pre fits. I stand by what I said.

Yea but for a cut rifled blank your only saving 50-100$ bucks for a barrel set up for a nut.
Yea you can get a Shilen, criterion, x-caliber and a few other option but I’ve never had one shoot as consistently good as a top shelf barrel done by w good smith.

AI, I noticed some heavier sporter barrels only measure 1.200, would this still work to shoulder the barrel to a Savage action? Thanks!
