Should F-class shooters be required to pull targets?

It in rual Florida where they say Yes Sir and No Mam. Larry

I understand and great you have help available with adult supervisors. But some match directors don't have you helping them!! We needed 2 desperately last week and had none

I think it depends on how remote the range is to the source of the pullers. Inexpensive help ($20-$30 each) is much harder to come by than it used to be. I've tried recruiting teens from the neighborhood to travel to and from nearby matches with me to serve as a target puller in my stead, and they all seem to want $50-$60 for the job.

Bernie Sanders and this $15 an hour nonsense has not helped the cause. I tend to agree with Chris, anyone who thinks this is easily done for $20 bucks or so in a reliable way without lots of additional headaches for the match organizers probably has not really tried to do it. There are a lot of moving parts to organizing a match, and one often does not know how many shooters are going to show up.

There may be some matches where paid pullers are available, cheap, and easy to work into the existing process. But there are a lot of matches where this is unlikely to work and creates a significant burden on the match organizers. I'm happy enough to work it out on my own, when needed, even if I have to pay a lot. (I do believe in free enterprise.) And I am happy enough with the interactions the younger folks get to have with the older generation who provides their own target pullers.

At some point, electronic targets will reduce the demand for target pullers, but at smaller matches and "borrowed" facilities that are not conducive to electronic targets, I will greatly appreciate match directors who allow private arrangements to be made.

For clarity it seems we may be comparing apples to oranges if we are discussing "paid pullers" for all matches. As Ben points out two day or longer matches can take a toll on the hardiest shooter pulling six relays or more if a match like the Bergers or Worlds or even Regional and State Championships.
I will wager shooters returning from Lodi will be praising the Silver Mountain E Target. I competed on them At Blakely GA for a year. I admit after the first relay I had my doubts, but by the third relay I was in love.
Part of the affection had to do with not having to pull targets, much like paid pullers.
I have been a Highpower match director for a local club and know like most "groups" of individuals gathered up for a common endeavor the bulk of the success rests with a "few" selfless people to make the sacrifice to pull the event off. This is in my eyes leadership and dedication not found in everyone contrary to popular belief of the PC crowd.
I venture paid pullers will be a thing of the past due to the adoption of e targets and not purists unwilling to adapt to a changing world. JMTCW

They do but they are included in the help .
Some time all a person has to do is ask . Larry

Growth and organization takes time to develop these things. This is why the people rather than money make a club great! If guys like you that really care will be men and get in the trench with the match directors then anything is possible. Finding match directors ain't so easy either for some clubs. This Fclass needs leaders right now

Interesting reading. Living in Phoenix and being in the pits at Ben Avery love him or hate him, Richard is the Pit Boss for bigger matches. Most people know of Richard and 2 years ago at the Berger Richard fired his first paid puller.

I am still a sling shooter and all of us like good consistent service at any match. I still pull my target and also own a SMT. Last weekend at Ben Avery we shot a practice and there was not 1 puller in the pits. When the winter visitors return I believe there will be 12 SMT privately owned by shooters. I truly enjoy the SMT for practice and will have no problem pulling my target at the bigger matches. In time you will see the electronics arrive in other places than Lodi. Wayne at SMT has been providing service and support as well as covering the dumb questions that come up from time to time. No new technology is flawless but it is on the horizon for all of us.
With the SMT I charge my puller and the service is very consistent.

I have and it only takes a few with negative input to turn it all bad
I figure you win as a team . And loose when your not.
At 77 I can see where older shooter have and would stop shooting.
If someone want to pay it shouldn't be stopped .
I would shoot NRA F class because they realize some can't get down and belly shoot . Larry

I started shooting across the course when all the clubs furnished target pullers. I got involved with running the matches. Finding target pullers for the matches was one of the most difficult tasks we had. After I shot for five or six years clubs quit furnishing target pullers and the shooters had to pull targets. I do not mind pulling targets but it can get to be work. Since I have gotten older and lazier I shoot F Class and last year was the first time that I ever had a target puller at any match and that was the Berger match. I only asked for a target puller because I had fallen on the ice (in Wisconsin) and had very sore ribs and I asked for a target puller. I was granted one and I thought it was wonderful. I feel that I should have shot better with a target puller than I did. But it was the first time in all the years of shooting on the same level that the folks who had always had a target puller were.

Anyone who has run and organized a match of any size trying to get target pullers and being fair about it is a very difficult job. Keeping the target pullers on the right targets and relay cause a difficult task for both the Stat Office, Line Officer and Pit Officer. I would like to say that once Lodi has installed the SMT system everyone will have a target puller and everyone's puller will be the same speed and I personally think it will be the fairest match that you or anyone else has fired.

We put a lot of effort, work and time into the electronic target system and rebuilding our range to make it work. It should be a lot of fun!! We also would like to welcome all of you who are coming to the FCNC matches this year and w are putting all our efforts we can TO SHOW YOU A GREAT GREAT MATCH. See you in a few days.

Earl,
You are the best in the business. No one runs a better match then you & Karin and your crew. See you next year, or maybe in Phoenix?

I have never been to an F Class shoot, but am hoping to start. For this reason I do not know how this works. A few posters have stated "I pull my own targets" does this just mean that they take their turn to pull targets for another shooter? I assume that is the case. Are there teams that pull for each other or does the pit boss assign who pulls what? Also doesn't the first shooter or first flight of shooters up, have an advantage as to not having already spent time in the heat and frenzy of the pits pulling targets?

Most matches have 3-4 relays. Suppose they have three.

One relay shoots while another relay pulls targets (goes down to the pits, pulls the target down after the shot, puts a spotter in the shot hole, and a marker disk in a position on the target edge signaling the score back to the firing line) while the third relay writes down the score and confirms that the shooter he is scoring for fired the shot.

The three relays take turns fulfilling the different roles. It is not a perfect rotation, but they alternate in a given order to move things along quickly and without more pit changes than needed.
