Shotgun length of pull question

On a shotgun is there a certain measurement from the tail of the stock to the trigger that is kind of a rule? Or can you do anything that feels comfortable? The reason I ask is I was shooting skeet the other day and someone mentioned that it looked like I was up on the gun pretty tight that measurement was 14 inches, my shotgun will take spacers so I added another inch and a half to it to make it 15 1/2 and it feels much more comfortable but I didn’t know if I’m going into uncharted territory. Thanks for the help.

It's all about fitting the gun to you. 14" is pretty standard and 15-1/2 is very long unless you're about 6'8" tall and all arms. Lol! But if it works and fits you, it's right for you.

It all depends on how you’re built. I’ve seen tall, heavy built guys with no neck shoot a shorter LOP than a much shorter lanky guy. Long neck with no chest shoots a longer LOP. Big chest or short neck equals a shorter LOP. LOP is easy. You want your thumb with a normal shooting grip to be about 1” from your nose. Longer than that and they swing slower like a tiller and shorter they swing faster. My most active year I shot over 44,000 targets..

I just did a measurement and I had about an inch and a half from the tip of my nose to my thumb which matched exactly the inch and a half worth of spacers that I added so I took a half inch off to give me roughly an inch I’m gonna try Shooting it there the next time I go out and see if my clay count goes up. Appreciate the help.

It's a necessity to have a proper fitting clay gun. Fit and balance is key IMO. I like an adjustable comb so my cheek bone rests in same exact spot each time and I like it set for flat shooting. Both sporting and trap. Lots like a high shooting trap gun...not me. Get the fit down and refine from there...experiment and don't be afraid to try different, regardless if conventional or not.

A rough and dirty measure is to hold the gun by the grip with the shotgun lying sideways on a table and your bicep by your side but forearm and hand at 90 degrees (place your forearm on a table). If the butt just touches the bottom of your bicep, the length is where it needs to be. If it doesn’t touch the bottom of the bicep, it may be too short for you and if it’s too long then it will press hard into your arm.

I will admit to not being a shotgun guru by any means. A proper fitting shotgun will improve scores pretty dramatically, along with a good coach.
I lucked into a Model 12 duck bill trap with custom wood a number of years ago. Just so happened there was a salesman in the shop with everything to fit a shotgun for another fellow. They measured me and measured the stock configuration on the old WW. His comment was I would spend as much for the stock as they wanted for the whole rig, said it fit me perfect.
It is a great looking piece of lumber. I figured a lot so sales pitch too.
Forward to the first night of trap. 25 straight on a regular basis was a no issue. 23-24 I will admit to being more common, operator error on my part.
This one shoots high so you can see the bird/clay.

Check to the comb, “wood on wood” is what they preached.
