Shot Shell Shortage?

Was in Rural King picking up a Trophy Rock today and they had this. Not familiar with the brand but they View attachment 1272114View attachment 1272115had this and another section of #8s. For $7.99 a box I'd have grabbed a flat for dove if I needed them.
I bought a couple of flats of the challengers recently. They break targets OK, but out of 4 boxes, I've had 2 that had to punched out of the chamber with a rod. One in a Citori and 1 in a 11-87. Brass head bulged and stuck in the chamber. From what I've read, seems to be a not too rare occurrence with them.

I shoot A LOT of trap. I'm at the grand American right now. I bought shells all winter whenever I got word they came in. Finding a supply now is gonna be tough. Plenty of shells at the shell house here but you have to sign up to shoot to get them, then take a voucher to the shell house for the exact amount you need . He could try ordering directly from federal but I doubt he'd like the price. I shoot somewhere between 2o to 30 thousand a year and if things don't straighten out I'll be down to nothing after next year. Word around the campfire is Federals warehouse is pretty full with shells, just having a hard time getting trucks to get them to market. Heard this from two people who are in the industry. Take it for what its worth. They aren't expecting any easing in the shortages till mid year 2022. As far as challengers, unless they've changed something they kicked and the shot in them was pretty soft. Maybe for sixteens but for Handicap I'm on 27 yards and I wouldn't shoot them back there if you gave em to me. Ymmv

I picked up a case last year just for this reason at a very good price. The same with primers and powder. I just ordered another case of No. 6's for dove. I try to get 1 1/4 oz loads when I can find them. I found over the years that the cheap box store 1 oz. No 8's just cripple too many birds for my taste. I see feathers fly but the birds keep going only to drop dead hundreds of yards away. With a decent load I can usually get a limit of 15 birds with one box of shells. It's actually cheaper in the long run.

If you ever put any of those cheap dove and quail loads on paper and saw how they patterned you'd wonder how you ever hit anything. They're made so cheaply you can hardly call them ammo. I always joke that their approved by the Sierra club, they won't kill anything! Lol.
