Fellas i am going to have one of my 6mm 8 twist barrels chambered tomorrow for this new Haverkamp action. I am going to put this barreled action in a robertson BRX stock. I want to keep this barrel as short as possible and yet i still want max velocities. Do you think 25" is ok? I dont have a lot of experience with the 6br but i do have a little with 28" barrels. will i get good velocities with a 25" barrel? Please advise personal experiences. Lee

Lee, I cut my 28 inch back to 26 inch and rechambered - lost nearly 100 flps but some of that may be due to headspace??
A common feeling is that the shorter barrel improves accuracy and it often more than makes up for the drop in velocity. A couple of guys here reckon 26 is all you need for 6mmBR but I am not so sure now.

I shoot a 20 inch 6br in a XP-100 frame and it shoots easily as good as my long barrels do.. I wouldn't want to try to stretch one out to a 1000 yards though.............

Sketlee,
I chose a barrel length of 24" on my suppressed walk about varminter. I'm getting 3,300fps with 70gr TNT's or 2,780fps with 95gr Berger VLD's. I'm a bit of a velocity slut so the rifle in question is currently being rechambered to 6BRX for a little more speed - as an after thought 26" would have been a nice barrel length to settle on ::) Remember you can always chop....but its very hard to add on some more barrel ;D

Skeetlee,
Can't find my records so can't tell you the exact load but think I were only getting 2,630fps with the 105gr amax in my 24" barrel. Accuracy were great but speed too slow for what I wanted so used the 95gr Berger VLD instead.

Just my opinion here, the barrel length changes the location/vel of the accuracy nodes. I try to find the high node, some times when you cut a barrel short you cut yourself out of the high node and must drop to the next which could be 100 or even 200fps slower.
I run a 22" BRX and the nodes are 3075 and 3160+- A 107 at 3050 is no problem, 3160 not a chance. A 95smk can hit both but the 3160 loads are warm so in the end a 23"-24" may have worked out better but then again it may have completly changed the location of the node.

I will no tomorrow the final out come of my 6br barrel length. I had a brux barrel that i chambered for a new BAT b at 28inches. I was under the impression that all bat barrels are interchangeable but they are not always. I tried to screw this new barrel on another bat action and the dam thing got stuck. My gunsmith is very precise when the chambers a barrel and the threads on this particular barrel were to tight for the threads on this other bat action. So with the barrel stuck i had to send it back to BAT to have it removed. the barrel was cut off. The barrel is now 27" and i have to have it rechambered for this haverkamp. I might be able to squeeze 26" out of it. I sure hope so. So here is a lesson. Unless you cut your threads with some wiggle room dont try swapping barrels from one bat to the next. My smith did the right thing by making it a very close fit. I prefer it that way, but you loose the possibility of action swapping by doing so. That was a bad day, having a brand new action with a brand new barrel and they wouldnt come apart. BAT made it right though!!

I spent the day with Mr haverkamp yesterday and we chambered the barrel to the new Haverkamp action. It was really cool learning and watching the process. The Brux barrel ended up at 26 inches and i think its going to be just right. Tom said that the brux barrel felt like it was a harder stainless than the kriegers or bartleins he has chambered. I dont know if that really means anything but i wouldnt think it would hurt either. Now all i need is a shehane st-1000 and i will be off to the range. I am really going to concentrate on the 108bib bullets or the 107 sierras. I am not sure what the velocities will be, but i will post! Thanks Lee
