Short Barreled 28 Nosler

Is there anyone out there with experience running 180-195 grain bullets in a short-barreled 28 Nosler? I am currently building a short barreled (16”) 28 Nosler and I am looking for any info on velocities and powders using 180 and 195 class bullets. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Not to discourage you 7Fingers but I think that it will be a tough find regarding others using the 28 Nosler with a barrel that is anywhere close to that short. - The 28 Nosler cartridge is designed around the use of slower powders which normally to not reap the best performance in quite short barrels. (especially 16"). - In fact I believe that if I was considering a .284 / 7mm caliber with a barrel that short I would choose something that burned a faster powder than the 28 Nosler and cartridges of similar case capacity.

Good luck & Kind Regards -

I have to echo the "why". Half your powder will burn up in front of the barrel, after the bullet exits.o_O

My ears just started ringing for some strange reason...

According to quick loads the 183 match king will run 2700 out of a 16 inch barrel with 100% powder burn before the bullet exits the barrel

Randy, I know of two of them on XP actions. Maybe the guys will chime in here.

Hmmmm - I don't know a whole lot about the Remington XP action, But I'm inclined to believe that the 28 Nosler may be just a tad much for the XP, especially running +60K psi loads & the amount of bolt thrust that would be generated. - In advance, If I'm incorrect then I'm willing to edit or delete this post. - I know that I don't have the "wavo's" or inclination to sit behind a 28 Nosler chambered "XP anything" - (Pistol, hand-canon, or rifle).

This 28 Nosler is going to be built on a Undesignated Savage Precision Target Action.

Okay - That would handle the forces of the 28 Nosler. - Good luck with your project. - The 28 Nosler is an excellent cartridge indeed IMO and I'm very satisfied to date with the one I'm working with in "rifle configuration".

I’m looking to connect at 2000+ yards in a long range competition. I was able to connect at 1760 with my 6x47 pistol on a 12” steel plate but that was really stretching it. I would also like to use a longer barrel but then it no longer falls into the handgun category as specified by the ATF so a tad under 16” it will be. I have been competing with these handguns for a few years and do quite well at our local 1000 and 540 yard steel plate matches. I normally use a 16” barreled 223 running 80gn Berger so I figure the 28 Nosler should be a little better.

I would really enjoy hearing more about your project. What barrel mfg'er are you going to use? What about optics mounting to get to 2K? The PTA will be a good platform to use.
