Short barrel 6x47L

Considering a 18 inch 6x47L barrel. Anybody fooled with the 6x47L in a short barrel? I realize I will give up 200 or so fps but wonder if I give up any of the 6x47L inherited accuracy? Would I be better off with a 6BR or Dasher in the short barrel application?

My next 6x47L will be a lightweight short barreled version at 22". I don't really see the need to go down to 18". I know of a couple 6x47L's that hammer with 22" barrels. Also I would stick with the 6x47L vs the 6 Dasher/6BR for a truck/carry gun for a couple reasons. One is that way you will never have issues feeding. And for two, it will give you a little extra velocity.

I am running a 20" 6x47lapua and should be getting somewhere in the region of 3000fps with the 105amax so I would expect the 18" to be around 2900-2950.
This is using IMR4350 rem 7.5 primers.
Definitely no less accurate than the 26" I was previously running.

That is the kind of information I was looking for.

Ackleyman........ truck/4 wheeler/atv. And, I like short fat handy barrels. The guys at the Houston Warehouse said 21.75 was the the best length. I can use a short heavy barrel and the rifle stays under 10 pounds too! I'll probably put a brake on it so I can see it hit steel at>250yards and that will make it 20 inches. AND NOBODY ELSE WILL HAVE ONE ;D

Except the guys that run them in xp-100's.....

Agree.

I am building a 15" + brake XP100 6.5 X 47 L.
McMillan rear grip BR stock w/ 3" wide forend.
Hart 1.25" - .9", 8/1 t.

The stock is from a special run by a group @ SP.com, before my involvement. Aaron was probably in on it.

18" can get kinda LOUD! I would go 22", then cut off as necessary, there is a whale of a difference between 18 and 22"...like a country mile!

This barrel was built for a Striker, but can't hunt with a barrel over 16 inches as a pistol in NY. I would have preferred a 20 inch but the price and chambering was right. This should make a neat handy rifle. I'll put a brake on it and keep the "experts" away from me when I shoot it!

Have you choreographed the 105g out of this barrel? I would be shocked if you were getting 3000fps without major pressure signs. 26-28in barrels get 3050-3100. Taking 6-8inches off is definitely going to decrease the MV. Please prove me wrong…..because I would love to chop my barrel back to 20in and use my suppressor on this cartridge

thats really impressive. And you got no pressure signs? If this is the case then its stupid to run a 26in barrel. a 22in barrel should get you in the sweet spot, right around 3100fps. I wonder why people are running long barrels

I did a 10" 6x47l for an sbr guy and he loves it. Kills coyotes supressed like its his job. You dont have to be on the ragged edge of everybodys velocities- find your own barrel velocity. You can find a good load up at the top of your load pressure

It wasn't a warm weather load, but that's where the accuracy was at, and it was my winter coyote truck gun, that I've since sold.

My #1 coyote gun is a 22" 6x47 and the sweet spot is 3030, another 22" gun is a hair over 3000. Longer barrels=free velocity. My 26" barrel I run at 3150 w/o a sticky bolt shooting in the summer.

Alf, I'm getting that 20" cut to 16" right now and threading it for a suppressor. It will put down coyotes drt. I'll guarantee it!

Yes this load was chronographed at 3025 fps .
