Short barrel .308 powder

I settled on Varget but had to settle for A-2495 since that’s what the Sportsman’s Warehouse had. I just got a pound, so not a big commitment.

Now to find large rifle primers. (Pause for laughter.)

Thank you for your insights and suggestions.

Ammoseek.com can be your friend in searches for hard-to-find items such as LRPs:

If you don't see anything you like on their list, I would advise visiting several reputable reloading component vendors (Powder Valley, MidSouth, Graf's, Natchez, Bruno's, etc.) each morning, afternoon, and evening until you find some. Alternatively, you can get on primer watch lists, usually for a fee.

FWIW - I'm not sure why you felt you had to settle for A2495. Several online vendors currently have Varget in stock (1 lb). If you want to try Varget at some point in the future, buying more than a single pound at a time will help ease the pain of the hazmat shipping fee, although that will never go away entirely. Good lucl with the search!

Advice appreciated.

Regarding online purchases, the combination of the hazmat fee, usually charging taxes, and price gouging really irks me. I can get most anything I want if I pay twice the going rate, or four times what is a fair and reasonable price.

Eventually availability and pricing will reach a reasonable equilibrium so I’ll just bide my time. $30/case primers are a thing of the past, but $50-60 might happen again one day. I haven’t handloaded in 25 years, so even normal prices look high to me.

VARGET good for...
308win, 223rem
7mm08,
375 H&H
light bullets in the 243win (55 to 75 gr bullets)
30'06 up to 180 gr bullets but should work ok up to 200 gr bullets.

My 308 sports a 24” barrel. I finally found Alliant 2000MR again. My rifle loves it with 168 & 178 bullets. Shoot ground hog competitions out to 500yds, and my factory class Remington 308 has printed 2” 5-shot groups at 500 with the 2000MR behind Hornady 168gr BTHPs. If you can find it, worth giving it a try.
