Shooting w a sling?

Link

Silver $$ Contributor
Hi

I was wondering what you guys think of using a sling for shooting 100 yds. standing and sitting on the ground?

Where could I find best technique and equipment?

Thanks Link

I'd say either go to nationalmatch.us or www.shootersjournal.com and dig around the archives. There's a fair amount of discussion on the different position variations,open-legged, cross-legged, cross-ankle, etc. etc. etc.) and tips to help solidify your position. It only makes up at most 25% of a High Power XTC match, but it's one of the more fun stages,Rapid Fire, 10rds in 60 seconds w/ a mag change, including getting into position) so a fair amount of time/energy expended on it.

A number of High Power shooters drop in here too so you might get some other answers here as well.

I'm a big fan of shooting with a sling! :) Here's a link to a short article I put together for Precision Long Range Hunter last year:

http://precisionlongrangehunter.com/articles_shooting.htm

Also - there's a dandy book on sling use by USMC MSgt James Owens avail at http://www.jarheadtop.com

I'd look at either Tactical Intervention or Turner Saddlery for good slings - depending on if you prefer nylon or leather. Creedmoor Sports also sells some great slings for highpower match shooting.

Shooting with a sling is a great skill to develop. Best of luck!

The biggest problem with shooting with any sling tension is that most hunting rifles don't have a sufficiently rigid forearm. If you want to try it, watch the forearm of your rifle as you apply tension to it, if you can see it move, you're probably not going to get very good results with it.

I have the slings adjusted, on my walk around varminters, to loop around my bicep. This enables me to establish a triangulated upper body position and by moving my left arm up, I am able to draw a fairly stable sight posture for off hand shooting. I've been shooting this style off-hand my entire life.
