Shooting "stories"

Is it just me, or do some of you guys get to hear everyones special "shooting" story once they find out that you are a gun crank/nut/shooter...what ever you are. Since I shoot long range, I always get furthest/best long shot "story". WILD storys.

The other day I got one. "I walked out the door and saw a coyote over by that big tree across the field there" as he points to the tree in question. I guessed it to be between 500 and 600 yards. "I grabbed my 22 magnum....them are flat shootin guns ya know.....held about 2 foot over his back and hit him square. Since he didn't go right down I shot him again". Now...I am thinking..(to myself, of course..and those that know me...it isn't always "to myself"....kina foot in mouth syndrome) that two feet isn't getin it done... just checked.....with a 100 yard zero......winchester ammo......59 feet. FIFTY NINE FEET HOLDOVER.

Mabe he was zeroed at 590!?!?

This is a fishing tale...."I caught a fish the other day......weighed 65 lbs.....took a picture of it. Picture weighed 4 lbs.!! ::)

Along the fish story, one of the most outrageous "outdoor" stories I have ever been told was: "So Mike, how was your fishing trip to Lake Superior?" "Awesome, we caught so many halibut we had to start throwing back." I said, "Lake Trout?" "Nope, halibut just like up in Alaska."

Ok... :o

On the other hand Tod. Most of us here have an idea of long range and what it takes to shoot at 1K. Dont you find that when "trying" to discuss it with just the standard guy you either get the .22 Mag story you got or they just dont believe its truly possible unless your shooting a 50 cal... I have learned just to keep my mouth shut... Lol.

I gotta go get my Remmy pump in .35 Rem ready for Raton.. Dang, I'll have to buy a new box of shell, this last one lasted me 16 yrs.... Them there 200 gr fedchesters really buck the wind and I put a new Baraska scope on it, only cost me 39$

;D

Best story I was ever told was at the American Leigon Hall in good old downton Lemmon, South Dakota. My dad lives there and many of the locals know I shoot.
Story was about how this particular person (guy telling the story) was pulled right out of basic training and sent directly to VietNam with the Special Forces. Why was such an honor bestowed upon him you ask, well it seems he was able to shoot 2" groups at 1600 yards with his issue M14. My dad was furious with me for not calling him out, I had just figured if he was that good I may not want to piss him off.

You guys know the difference between a Fish Story and a Fairy Tale ? A Fairy Tale starts out once upon a time--and a Fish Story starts out now this aint no lie !

I was at the local shop one time picking up a Savage .17HMR, talking to the salesman while we waited on the paperwork to clear. Some guy butts in and starts telling us about the coyote he shot at 500 yards with his .17HMR. The salesman gave me a look that said "I hear this at least 3x a day." Then on the flip side, I made the mistake of talking about target shooting .223 @800 yards and a guy pretty much called me a liar. ::)

Overheard a fella in a gun store saying the. 338 was not big enough to hunt deer on Admiralty Island. He knew a guy who seen a 20 foot brown bear over there. I could not help but laugh out loud and tell the guy they rarely get half that size, even on Kodiak and the peninsula. Nope, his buddy would not tell stories. Did you know they took gullible out of the dictionary yesterday? :P

Ever hear the old poem that goes;

Early to bed,
Early to rise.
Hunt like hell and make up lies.

Some folks live by it :)

I also hear those unbelievable long shot stories all the time when people find out I shoot long range.
One of my favorites was while talking about off hand hunting shots, an old co-worker of mine was in the middle of telling one of his stories and said, "We spooked the buck and when he came up on the other ridge at over 600 yards I pulled up my 30-06 off hand, put the crosshairs right on top of his back and dropped him with one shot."

Previous parts of the conversation revealed that he was zeroed at 100 yards, using factory ammunition, had a 3-9X scope, and has never owned a rangefinder in his life :) I just popped my eyes open and said "WOW, that's amazing" While secretly knowing he was so full of fecal matter that his eyes would be turning brown soon :)

here's one for ya.. I was at my gunsmiths shop picking my new .308 ftr rifle and these 2 guys were asking me about the rifle and what I used it for? So I told them that I shot in ftr matches from 600-1000yds. And the gunsmith said yep he does shoot and does pretty good. Well one of these guys asked me if I ever heard of a contender pistol? I said yep. then he goes on to tell me he has one in the .221 fireball that he shoots at 600yds, I said cool.. Then both of them tell me the owner has shot quarter sized groups at 600yds with it and then the said guy that is the most accurate thing I have ever shot. Then he tells me he killed a wild pig at 250yds, one shot right between the eyes... Man I don't know about you but,,, I had to ask my to build me one too..HAHAHA I could not help but to laugh...

Every year someone asks me about shooting 1,000 yd. bench rest. I explain about precision reloading, gun handling and how a match is run under IBS and Williamsport rules. I go thru all the proceedures of setting up your equipment on the bench. I then explain how the match is actually run. You will get six minutes for your sighter period to shoot clay pigeons, then you will have 10 minutes to shoot either 5 or 10 record shots at the target.

I always ask the new shooter if he understands everything so far? There is always one guy who asks " Who is throwing the clay pigeons?"

I wish someone would get my PDog rifles shooting like that.

I have several custom barreled 700's that will not.

One custom Bat that shoots pretty good, but not .2's and .3's all day long.

All will consistently kill PDogs if I do my part.

I get a kick out the guys on this forum who claim to shoot .2"s and .3"s all day long with their varmint rifles and AR-15s.

They provide no backup of their qualifications or even whether they are shooting 3-shot or 5-shot groups. They do not state whether they are using wind flags or sighter shots.

I am a benechrest shooter and have been for a number of years. When I hear the old .2" and .3" all day long song I just nod my head and walk away quietly.

Well some of that is actually pretty true fellas.

You'd be very surprised just how accurate even a factory varmint rifle can be these days with the right equipment and carefull handloading. Not that hard to pull that kind of accuracy from todays rifles and barrels using advanced reloading equipment and quality brass/bullets

BigD......Are you talking 3, 2, ......or 1 shot groups?

Local legend known for his stretching the truth........."just shot a groundhog in the holler from the Murphy farm ......1/2 mile shot....and he stood bigger than a bar stool."
Same guy, explaining to a distraught neighbor ( a new move-in from the city)......"Now see here my good man....I ain't even ever seen your cat" (while holding a rifle, discretely pushing dirt down the GH hole that contained the expired cat).
Same guy, who visits an old friend and finds the friends wife upset because her cat has been in the house crawlspace for days meowing and won't come out........say's "No problem, I'll go home and "Skippy" my little rat terrier....he hate's cats....he'll chase her out." Goes home and comes back with "Skippy", carries the terrier to the crawlspace door, gives "Skippy" a pep talk and shoves him inside........a few moments of silence....THEN all hell breaks loose...growling, squeelling for minutes on end.....then silence.....all eyes watching the door.....until "kitty' emerges unscathed followed a minute later with a bloody "Skippy" hobbling out......Guy say's to neighbor......"That's one mean pussycat!"

Academy gun department salesman story: I had a guy tell me he shot two bucks at 1,000 yards with his 7mm Rem. Magnum with two shots after his buddy had missed 10 times with a 30-06. Supposedly bucks were fighting and he dropped them with one shot each. Somewhat believable up to this point, and then he tells me. "You see, as the bullet flies through the air, it's nose starts opening up like a mushroom, so the further you shoot something, the harder it hits. At that distance, my 7mm Mag hit them hard!, the next day by buddy bought a 7Mag..."

farmers son told me he shot a coyote at night, 800 yards, with a 222.

also I asked him how high he holds his 204 ruger to make a 800 yard shot and he said about 3 inches. I just go along with all his stories. tryied to get him to shoot with me last saturday and I'm going to try to get him to every free saturday I get. can't wait to see how baffled he is when his 204 ruger doesn't get make it to the target when he holds 3 inches high. I'll still pretend I don't know what's going on. ;D

I'm the south paw shooter of the family, when hunting season rolls in.. Yeah, I take my hits, but here's where my accuracy comes from..

Going back some years, there was plenty of family members and close friends to hit the surrounding farms and wood lots.. One late Saturday afternoon, the last drive would be the swamp and beaver dam, time for hip boots and who's walking through.. There's only myself and my favorite cousin that actually walk in deep to shake up the thickest areas and yes, the water is cold and deep in places with a slogan, always save the rifle first..

Part way through the swamp, I downed a doe near the swamp edge to tag for myself.. After an hour of continued fighting red brush and stalking for underwater raceways, we finally came to the dam, ending the hunt for the day.. Everyone slowly gathered back to the trucks, I'm stripping out of my hip boots and carhartt's.. My dearest older cousin, we nicknamed Coon, mentions to me, damn that .270 is deadly for that neck shot near the head.. I replied, that's Remington special left hand series right out of the box..

He continues talking about looking for a .270 at the next gun show.. I mentioned to Coon, one thing you have to remember, mine is left hand action with a left twist barrel, if you bought one, you'll have to buy a right hand with right twist with less accuracy.. Coon hesitated and looked at me, I quickly responded with.. Yeah, that's why left handed rifles are so much more accurate, it's the left twist and their hand built one at a time, not mass produced like right handed rifles..

By now, Coon has that thinking look on his forehead and replies, I can agree with that, no wonder you don't see many left handed hunting rifles.. Gotta love my cousin, but the ones listening just smiled and tipped their cold amber beverages at me..

I knew some guys years ago that were archery shooters, they shoot 3/D and hunted with Mathews bows. They had the only ones that the arrow would gain speed after it left the string. I thought we could set the chrony up at 5 feet and at 50 feet and find out if this was true. But they were always too busy. i called the factory to check them out but they said no one there would know cause the bows they had were special built. They shoot rifles now.

Like most of you, I tend to go along with it. I usually end the conversation by saying something along the lines of "geeezzz, you must be pretty good. I'm surprised that you haven't gone to the olympics or something!"
Unfortunately, most don't catch the sarcasm.
