Shooting sticks

What are you guys using for shooting sticks when coyote calling? There are times when my prone harris bipods just aren't tall enough. Looking for a good set but honestly don't know where to start. Need to be somewhat lightweight, have 2 legs, be able to pan, and more or less designed for a sitting position, and be able to support 16-17# rifles.

For me, I basically decided that they are about 85% not necessary for my situation. I'm kind of a 0-200 yard caller. The 15 or so percent of situations where they would be "the thing", don't warrant me carrying them all the time.
NOW IF, I had a couple of spots where I knew I'd have the long shots, I'd prolly use one of my tripods, and endure the hassle of carrying it. Heck, there's a lot of spots where I pack both rifle and shotgun, so I often carry more crap than I need. :rolleyes: jd
 
Bog-Pods, two or three legged versions are relatively light weight, collapsible and work well for me. Watch for sales, they can be had for not much money. I usually leave a three legged unit in Africa each year as they work better than some of the more traditional shooting sticks the PH's use

I hunt a lot of open/sagebrush terrain. Shots can be anywhere from 50-1K. Most I shoot are typically between 2-600 however. I never claimed to be an expert caller. My shooting skills tend to make up for that haha.
 
Sticks, I used two 3/4" x 3/4" oak 48-54"(depending on your height, I'm 5'11 sticks are 48") long. Bolt together 10-12" from end(couple washers as needed for clearance). Wrap the short ends in paracord/leather laces/rubber gasket material. Foot or so below the "cross" another piece of para cord to adjust leg spread for height. With these I can sit on the ground,cushion or folding chair and shoot steady. Does take a bit of practice when sitting on the ground, sitting in a chair is easier for me. I sprayed mine with spar varnish, last many years.
 
Neatest pair of sticks I ever used was on Wyoming hunt.

Had already killed a nice pronghorn with my .257 and was out with my 445 Super Mag for a muley.

Realized I needed some sticks for longer shots but no trees with branches to be found on the high plains. Found a cedar fence post that was aged and cracked. Pried a couple nice 3/4 x 3/4 sticks out just the right length and bound them together. How they broke out so nicely I don't recall.

Shortly after I jumped a nice buck out of a draw that paused near the crest as they tend to do and dropped him at 135 yards kneeling with that cross stick setup.

I saved those sticks as a momento of the hunt for years. They disappeared eventually....lost but not forgotten.

That's right there sounds pretty good, except I'd finish them by soaking in coyote urin, and a final polish with the oil of coyote anal glands. :p jd
 
I'm a little different than you guys. I don't own/use rifles. Been 100% handguns since 1978.
BogPods are definitely great. They have attachments for rifles, but I use their handgun one. I routinely use it in most all my hunting local, western, Africa. They are reasonably light. With my advancing age I also use it as a walking stick. Did 2+ miles in AZ for Coues, 1+ mile in UT for Shiras, routine use in Africa for all stalking except charging elephant (12 yds. offhand) charging lion (offhand 25 yds), rhino (35 yds).
My longest shot off mine in Africa was 375 yds (kudu). In WV 565 yds. crop damage deer.
Like the commercial says: Don't leave home without it.
 
Well I went ahead and ordered a deathgrip tripod. It's a little on the heavy side, but it seems to be a little better built than the bipods I was looking at from them. Seems like they had a lot of issues with the legs. I'll put it through the test this fall and winter and see how I like it.
 
We've been using, Hunters Specialties, Wood Stix for, Years ! ( about, $20.00 IIRC )
I Shot a Bull Elk, from the Siting Position, in Northern Arizona with them and,..
Shot another Bull from, the Kneeling Position over, Sage Brush @ 115 yds,.. in Central Idaho !
I also use them on, Side Hills for Yotes, as They JUST,..."Work" from, Sitting or Kneeling positions.
With my .270 WSM ( 140 gr. Bergers ) I hit 5,. 10 inch Plates in, a Row at 400 yds.
Pack rested, on my thigh to, support my, Rifles, Toe ! ( makes for, a Deadly combo to, around 400-450 yds ! ).
They Do take, a Little Practice to, get used to, using them, tho !

If you know of any used windmill wooden sucker rods that have wore down in diameter after use, they make good sticks by cutting to desired length and bolt together at top x where you want it.
 
I’ve made dozens of sets of sticks over the years. Each design an improvement over the last. The latest version is made of a pair of cross country ski poles with additional parts that I machined or fabricated. The rest portion is made of solid fiberglass driveway marker sticks fitted into small stainless fittings that are glued into the ski poles. They are covered with silastic tuning to protect the stock. The have a pivot of a 10/32 pan head screw with a nylock nut. The ground end has the same machined fittings with 16 penny nails for traction. They are 41 inches long, weigh less than a pound, and work REALLY well.
