Shooting Sports Spending Levels?

check your addiction level here. I'm not really sure if I should post this because some of us are still telling ourselves that we can stop any time we want, we just don't want to! The only sure way I know is the same here as it is in racing, when your checks start bouncing or your account gets frozen at your bank you at least slow down, ... for awhile. So here's the gauge, and I will leave it up to you to be honest here.

Does it cost you, A- $100 a week or a month? B-$500 a week or a month? C-$1,000 a week or a month? Or D- are you nut's, ... my wife might see this! Besides it's none of your Damn business!;)
 
I used to follow motorcycle racing and remember seeing an interview of a racing team owner talking about spending money fast enough to create a money vacuum. He proudly announced that if you spend fast and hard enough to create the vacuum, funds will rush in to fill the void. He was very careful to explain that this isn't for everybody. He said very few people have what it takes to spend that recklessly to get up the momentum to get the incoming funds to flow, it takes nerves of steel, that very few have.

I do the RFBR games, so it can get to be expensive weekends, or months, depending upon how many matches you decide to attend, and how many cards per match. We have 3 weekends of matches where I attend, so......
 
The activity of shooting gives me a place to focus my attention and time with the goal of staying active both mentally and physically. The cost is a secondary consideration. It has become more expensive like most everything but has yet to reach a level that has curtailed my engagement.
 
I would think that I average appx $200-$250/month. My wife knows and when she complains I remind her of the rifle I purchased in 2012 for $450 and recently sold for $900. I ask her what she thinks she could get for her $100 handbag she purchased last week or her $150 shoes she purchased last year.;)

Expenses related to my shooting habits/hobbies have never caused a household bill to go unpaid, nor has the wife/child/grandchild ever done without unless it was their choice. LOL
 
Back when I turned wrenches for a living, we were doing a lot of engines for vintage formula cars, the joke was how to get a million dollars racing. The answer was start with 5 million.

Shooting may be a $$ level or 2 down from racing & it really is none of your damned business. ;)
 
For me it’s a hobby. Not an investment.
Once I have to count the money it’s no longer a hobby. I don’t need another thing in my life that I’m working on a spread sheet to figure costs.
Shooting for me is enjoyment.
 
I used to allow $100 a month so $1200 a year. Back in the 90's. But now if a deal comes my way the sky is the limit, if I need it, if I might someday need it or if I don't already have one. Being debt free is not good when you have a shooting addiction!

OK guys, you probably want to keep this page confidential. Your spouse probably doesn't want to be reminded about all the times you ignored the Honey Do list and headed off to the range instead. And she certainly doesn't want to know how much you spend every year on your gun hobby.

I don't budget my spending so I can't tell you how much per week/month/year. Some periods of time I spend next to nothing and actually make some money by selling things I haven't used in a while.

I'll always keep an eye out for a deal on something. I've got a pile of parts that I may never get to, but I also know that if someone is looking for something, then I have no problem turning around and selling anything I have.

My wife has gotten used to not getting too attached to "things" in our house. She knows that for the right price it will be boxed up and headed out the door.
 
My spending varies, also !
During, the wonderful Covid Days,. I spent much More, as I was "Hoarding",.. a Bit !
Got Plenty of Everything ( even Primers ),.. NOW,
Ole pres Trump, bought Me ( got a relief check for, $2K from, Gub'Mint ), a New Rem., 700, SS "Lefty", in 6 XC about, 3 years ago, so I needed, ALL the Dies and Components for it.
I gave grandson, My .243 Win Tikka so I replaced it with, another Tikka in 6.5 Creed and Yep,.. needed, Dies Brass, Bullets, etc. for it. So my spending is, up & down, depending on "itch",.. to buy another, Gun.
I reload a Lot during the Winter and shoot on, Cold but, NON Windy Days thru, Spring into Summer months.
And I really DON'T want to know,.. How much, I spend on,.. my "Hobby",.. so Fudge,..THAT idea,.. LOL !
