Shooting rests - Shop made

Nice work by your students! Congratulations on instilling a work ethic and passing on your skills and knowledge. I taught machine shop for nine years at our community college. The "kids" were a little older than high school students but the majority were eager beavers wanting to learn. The only thing they didn't like was I banned Dykem. More than a few went on to four year machinist apprenticeships at local shops.

Did you ban Dykem for same 2 reasons I did?

Without trying to start any political bullshit.
Today’s kids definitely need to get into a career that will always need to stay where they choose to live.
Way too many jobs are farmed out to other countries far too easily.
they even take the aircraft you plop your ass down into to ElSalvador for its routine maintenance work.
If corporations can ship something out in order to turn a higher profit, it’s gone.

We live in a mobile culture. Our kids ARE gonna move ... eventually.

The trades (electrician, A/C, auto mech, plumber, welder, refrigeration etc) are ALWAYS gonna be needed everywhere ppl live. SInce ppl / residences / entire communities can't be moved overseas by a corp for profits, the trades are always gonna be needed right here, they'll always be a viable means of making a living.

Probably. It's a time waster and anathema to learning to use measuring instruments, dials and DROs.
(Then there's the spill factor).

Vocational education is not going to get much media coverage in this society in this day and time. It still is very much alive. We have several vocational schools in easy driving distance of here.. I hate to hear the statement that young people don't want to learn. Twenty one years teaching machine shop proved that to be different. I can give you an easy hundred names that proves that statement to be not true. Sadly not many parents want their kids to be plumbers, builders, welders, or machinists. I can go on but you get the idea. I'm pretty passionate about educating the youth in vocational education with no apologies.

There are still students that want to learn the trades. Not as many as in years past based on my experience teaching at a local Community College and an NCCER certified trade school in Altavista VA. In my estimation a lot of the lack of interested in the trades is that fewer youngsters are being raised on the farm or by parents that put food on the table by working in the trades. Just my two cents. Graduated with a degree in Industrial Arts from Va. Tech and worked in manufacturing ( iron foundries) from 1970 until 2000. Did adjunct instruction in intro welding and basic metallurgy from the early 90's until 2016. That is the experience base for my thoughts.

One piece rimfire rest that I fabbed a couple of years ago when I fell into the 22 rimfire bench rest black hole. This was an absolute hoot to make. Couldn't afford to buy a commercial one after buying 2 cases of Eley Tenex for the rifle.

The rest was a fun project, put together it's twin for a friend who couldn't afford to buy one.

Exceptional workmanship. We used to shoot rimfire here in Bristol, WI. every Sunday for dimes. Bunch of old foggies at 100 yds. at glued on aspirin 3 " apart up and down on a 2'x2' piece of cardboard . What a hoot ! you only get one poke at a pill. You miss, and it goes to the guy on your right. Now.. you owe him a DIME ! pure fun. MY 40x with a 36x Weaver loved Eley 10x, red box. As you probably know, your barrel will tell you...
