Shooting rests - Shop made

I wanted to share pictures of Shooting Rests made by Precision Machining Students. I felt it better to start another thread on this subject. these rests were made in the class I taught for 21 years. Each was made for that students personal use. The purpose of the project was to teach certain machining skills and reinforce techniques already learned. ( I never had the forethought to use it as a fund raising project.............) Any way all these went on to be used by the students at home.
Most of the students I had are working in local Shops and Factories in the machining trade. There still is a lot of talented youth out there.
The rests could have been made with a simpler design but it was designed to be a learning exercise, so some degree of difficulty was included. All parts were assembled with mechanical fasteners and no welding was involved. The paint was applied by the students and was their choice of color scheme. It should go with out saying that I did a prototype for myself to prove the design...........

I've never seen one of these rests, but they have an excellent reputation and the photos look great. Is a windage top available for them?

An excellent idea for learning skills.
Takes me back to the days I was a vocational school student. A few of the courses we had were machinists, welding, mechanics, building maintenance, and carpentry.

Makes me wonder what kids these days are leaning in 'shop' class or if some of these courses even exist anymore.

Kids now a days don't want to learn...entitlement, everyone wins mentality. I see this daily.

I believe alot of schools did away with shop classes. Matt

Koudos to the instructor who has taught his students well and to the students for an excellent job.
Well done!!

Vocational education is not going to get much media coverage in this society in this day and time. It still is very much alive. We have several vocational schools in easy driving distance of here.. I hate to hear the statement that young people don't want to learn. Twenty one years teaching machine shop proved that to be different. I can give you an easy hundred names that proves that statement to be not true. Sadly not many parents want their kids to be plumbers, builders, welders, or machinists. I can go on but you get the idea. I'm pretty passionate about educating the youth in vocational education with no apologies.

Our schools got rid of all shop classes. Such a shame. We do have a great vocational school in the next town though. I’ve told my son that he can choose his path and I’d support his decision for vocational or college prep.

Nice work by your students! Congratulations on instilling a work ethic and passing on your skills and knowledge. I taught machine shop for nine years at our community college. The "kids" were a little older than high school students but the majority were eager beavers wanting to learn. The only thing they didn't like was I banned Dykem. More than a few went on to four year machinist apprenticeships at local shops.

Without trying to start any political bullshit.
Today’s kids definitely need to get into a career that will always need to stay where they choose to live.
Way too many jobs are farmed out to other countries far too easily.
they even take the aircraft you plop your ass down into to ElSalvador for its routine maintenance work.
If corporations can ship something out in order to turn a higher profit, it’s gone.
