Shooting Pdogs with David Tubb

You better bring your A game. Sadly, I didn't... hahahaha I did send lots of critters to pieces but no super long hits.

Did get to do a lot of testing at the ranch on steel out to 1500 yards with my 243. I was shooting R16 and R23 shooting my cool weather loads flawlessly in the heat.

Let's be honest varmint bullets are pretty worthless after about 700 yards (if that). The best performing varmint bullet I brought was the Sierra 85 HPBT. Very impressive groups out to 700 and not "horrible" at 1000 yards in MILD conditions. I shot some pretty small groups at 450 like same splat over and over. That's a lot of fun. It truly is under 1/4 ish minute out to about 450 or so. Super predictable.

I was shooting 3500 fps with R23. Blows up on critters really well too. Never had a doubt on any hit. Many separated into halves. Launches, fillets, etc etc

After that yardage better switch to the 115 DTAC with nose ring with "varmint deep cut". That bullet at 3100 fps is truly predictable out really far. Like 1500 yards far. Weather you can hit a pdog out there.... wellllllll???? Good luck feller!!

I'll post more after I get home.Screenshot_20200816-080028_Gallery.jpg Screenshot_20200816-080018_Gallery.jpg

Urbanrifleman-

Howdy !

Good times, fer sher !

Just out of curiosity, did you ever have occasion to try either RL-25 or RL-26 in the same gun w/ same bullets ?

With regards,

Your experience with the .243 & 85 Si HPBT is much like mine with the 6mm AI & 87 VMax's & RL 16 - 10 twist. I use RL 23 in the .243W with 105's.

Reloader 23 is really good would be 85 and the 80 but in my testing reloader 16 will actually give you more velocities. But I have a whole bunch of reloader 23 and it works perfectly fine but the problem you'll run into if you can't get enough in the case I really get the velocity up. But if you're willing to settle with a relatively high velocity and not super high velocity it's incredibly consistent. Percent you can get more reloader 16 in the case you can actually achieve higher velocities and get the same small groups. Both are completely temperature insensitive

looks like fun. Can you explain about 115 DTAC with nose ring and varmint deep cut. Is this a modification. Oh and twist for it.

Well... David is like 37 time national champion, shoots baboons for fun at 2000 yards, and has trained hundreds of military snipers.

I just like to shoot.
Only 37 national championships.
He's just a man, and your friend.
You shouldn't be intimidated.
Any one can win or lose on any given day.

We are all(well I know I am) just ribbing him about being intimidated shooting with Mr. Tubb! IT WAS HUMOR! I have talked to Mr Tubb either 2 or 3 times on the phone when I was building my brother and I our Xc's. One of the nicest and most generous man I have ever conversed with and gathering info concerning the XC design and how to load for it. Most of us here would feel just as urbanbanrifleman does, that it would be an honor to watch and make a good friend with Dave.

Trust me I'm just pulling on his leg a lil myself.
Point is thier friends, he shouldn't feel intimidated by Tubbs accomplishments, but
happy with his own.
I shoot with a few guys that are quite a bit better than myself, but if you think for 1 minute there ain't trash talking and ball busting going on you'd be mistaken.
Why?
Cuz were friends.

I'd like to know about the nose ringed DTACS too. I thought I'd read somewhere that the nose ringed bullets were intended for deer hunting, not varmint hunting.

Well, we tested them and the nose ring had to be cut deeper to blow up on a tiny Pdog. There is almost no skeleton to a pdog. So, the bullet has to be super fragile to blow up. But Dave was determined and sure enough!!! Last cut worked good.

The nose ring cutter should be out this year I think.

David made me a special barrel break in kit for my new Urbanrifleman barrels, and he put some FREE DTACS in the box!!! Along with free Tubb Dust!!!

Yah, a lot of that.

David is a really sweet man, it really saddens me that a lot people don't know that. I am doing my best to try to change that because he is my friend. I was hoping to get some video of David shooting pdogs but the camera didn't work.

David is just like his Dad! I shot with his Dad George many times shooting Palma, dined with him and the gang at night after a long day of shooting and it was always a superb event dining with George and Polly Tubb! George was as kind and generous a fellow as you'd ever want to meet and one helluva hard holder when it came to shooting! I have missed conversing with him now for many years since he passed on! George and Polly both...superb individuals...and great shooters!
