shooting pd from vehicle, inside or out -legal?

I have read that in various states the laws are different re, shooting from truck bed, over hood, or from inside at pd, ground hogs etc. - not at "game" - on private property /farm or ranch rds, not public,

what is your experience/
Bob

If my understanding is correct- in wy at least you can shoot "off" of a vehicle, but not "from" a vehicle.

So shooting from inside the cab of a truck is a no-no, but shooting off the hood is ok. Also, 2 tracks aren't considered "roads", so shooting off the hood of a truck on a 2 track is ok when shooting varmints, coyotes, pds etc.

You need to know the laws of the area you are shooting in, they can vary all over the place. Oregon has a law that you need to be 35 yds from the vehicle when shooting at big game, not sure about varmints. In Calif. we can not shoot across "two track roads", maybe also motorcycle trails. I noticed this yr that the wording has changed about shooting across roads. It is illegal to shoot from bed of truck or from inside cab for anything even targets.

Mattri,

in Wy, on a 2 track through a pasture, is shooting pd from inside, not across anything but grass, illegal?

i have seen it done, and heard both sides of the law, yes/no?
Bob

My understanding is that shooting from inside a vehicle is prohibited unless you have a special permit for a disability. That may not be accurate but it it is what I believe to be true- you may check and find something else.

as others have said,,,it varies from state to state,,,years ago when I used to travel thru the west I always asked the DNR of wht ever state I was in?...if you have an area or state in mind you should call the DNR there,,,I cant remember ,,,,rule of thum is,,,,dont shoot off of or out of a vehicle unless you are shur it is legal where you are,,,Roger
PS,,it even varies depending on what animal you are hunting and if on public or private land,,,,

FROM the Wy DF&G site:

Shooting from a Vehicle—Simply put, it is illegal to shoot any wildlife except predatory animals from any motorized vehicle. This includes off-road vehicles and snowmobiles. To legally fire a weapon, a person must be out of the vehicle. Hunters holding a handicapped hunter permit are exempt from this requirement.

Shooting from a Road—It is illegal to shoot or attempt to kill any wildlife from any public road or highway. No person shall fire any firearm from, along, or across any public road or highway. A public road is defined as any road that is open to vehicular traffic to the public. The road surface, the area between fences on a fenced public road or highway, and the area 30 feet perpendicular to the road surface on unfenced public roads is considered the public road. Two-track trails on public land are not public roads.

Depending on the state.....you can shoot from a vehicle IF you are on private property, but all are different.....

This is a good thread.

In NJ you cannot hunt from or resting on a vehicle. And you also can't hunt from a road, I can handle that too. But what about off the embankment of a road, this had me questioning it to such an extent I stay away from embankments now. I just don't want law enforcement telling me the embankment is part of the road. I would say 20 feet off the embankment into the field would be fine if there are no crops.

Virginia , you can shoot from vechile if you get a permit from Game and Inland Fisheries and it has to be filled out by doctor stating disability then signed by game warden.

I have friends that won't leave the cab of the truck to shoot PD's in South Dakota due to the snakes they have ran into. Great place to live, most anything goes!

Ditto for Minnesota ,BUT you must be off the right of way.

Bob,

Bear in mind where one may get a permit to shoot from a vehicle due to a physical limitation, one still has to obey the laws pertaining to shooting off a roadway or right of way... Then of course throw in the private land, public land, federal land, state land, school land, tribal land, corporate land and etc...

In short my expereince in MN & ND, you can get a permit to do so, but it does not permit you to shoot off a "public" roadway.

all of you have been helpful, i am most concerned about private or leased land (by rancher) on 2 track, not any "road or right of way" as typlically defined. the area i most likely will be in is Wy and there are a zillion rattlers in the pd town area. been shooting from bench and look around or my son warn me dont you hear that rattler, he aint happy.
pasture grass 6-18 inch tall

i dont like rattlers, so thinking about alternative- is this question - shooting from vehicle.

Drop a line to the Wyoming GFP/DNR and get it straight from them. Private or otherwise if your "Boots" aren't on the ground your in the vehicle at least in Minnesota. Also if you can/do shoot over the vehicle REMEMBER your scope is ABOVE the barrel. I know a person that put a "Nice" 25-06 sized hole in the passengers side box of a 6mo old truck.

Private land, still requires permits to shoot from a motor vehicle..... On leased land, I would question who is the lessor? If it is fed or state land owned land, the rules may very well apply. I would contact the BLM or USDA regarding your question or better yet, the county extension office for the area. Get a local "authority" on the line instead of a buearocrat (sp?)..
