Shooting on your own land vs Public Range

I just got home from my gun club shooting pistols. I was all by myself. The club is open from sunrise to sunset 7 days a week. There was a lot of .308, .223, 45LC, 10mm, 45acp brass on the ground. I just looked at it. To hot and muggy to spend the time picking it up.

I have my home in south texas and a ranch about 2 hours north Its been so hot in texas this summer its hard to schedule a trip to shoot but I will get plenty of time started in late Oct. to late January may even get in a couple of hog hunts but to answer youe question its the ranch hands down
aim small shoot small

I do have pretty much exactly that but only to a little over 500 from that window. Yes, I'm bragging a little bit but it's my little piece of Heaven on earth. Even has a concrete indoor shooting bench! Lol!
I usually keep 4 flags out all the time
Who or what is on the other side of the tree line in that photo?
I can see that you are shooting downhill and that it appears that bullets just land in the field but also means that a shot from level ground will be a different point of impact if sighted in from the downhill range.
I assuming that there no rocks in the field to cause a ricochet onto neighboring property/buildings.
Just have several thousand acres of AZ lease hold land across the fence line so as long as I don't shoot any of the grazing cattle I'm good... Would like to be able to have your set up though.

There's about 4ft of drop to 50 yards and the 100 yard target is pretty level to the window and slightly goes uphill from there. Then a woods, a big hillside, crops another tree line and 2.5 miles to a single house and 500 acres owned by family. All along a winding creek bottom. I think if you saw it you'd understand why I feel very good about it. No one in 24 years has ever questioned it.

If you have room to shoot distance, obviously your own land. I will say it's nice when you can get to a square range that gives you distance. However, it seems that no matter when you go to a public (even club) range, you've got to deal with people. A couple of 'usual' instances for me are: when someone also takes the bench next to them for storage of their equipent/guns/crap, and it happens to be one I need as I wanted to shoot 200 steel and it's the only bench left to do that. Then the person is mad cuz I moved his stuff. I moved it cuz his response was, "Shoot somewhere else." The other instance that is common is people not being aware of where their brass is landing. My friend and I were practicing F-Class when a guys sets up next to us and starts dumping 9mm brass all over my friend. I told him to move over, but he thought he was good where he was. That wasn't fun. And no, I don't have to get used to hot brass landing on us.
The best land I like to shoot on is the wide open desert/prairie. You can usually shoot as far as you want, at what you want, with no one around to be rude to you. Unfortunately, not everyone has that option. But, it's the best kind of shooting, IMO.

I do as well! With that being said I have reconsidered this as a possible
problem if Lord forbid something should go wrong (Ricochet) and a
bullet ended up in a neighboring house. I know, but even with the best
back stop, crap can happen and an insurance claim could be a nightmare.
So now I shoot pistol at the home berm and leave the rifle stuff for the
Club range.
Thanks Bill
Being at the range only relieves you of a minor part of the liability.

Wouldn't want to do the hot brass dance. That is for sure. Private land, to me, just makes better sense. Sun up to sun down if at all possible. Never understood the need to dump a magazine ie shoot as fast as possible. To me that sounds unsafe especially around other people. One of my friends will collect used brass, shotgun hulls, etc for recycle or dispose of properly. Great if in public but on your own land not necessary i.m.o.

Lots of unsafe shooters at public ranges from what I have seen. Makes me nervous more so than usual. I'm far from being an expert or professional but even I know just b/c you drop the mag doesn't mean it has been made safe. There could still be a bullet in the chamber. I shoot with a buddy on private land but that i just myown personal preference.
I stay off the ranges near deer season!

Here’s a little place that I can get some long range shooting done. I own a chunk of it (as do the rest of you guys). Notice the acreage. And there's another 118,000 acre piece not far to the west of this one. There are a few coyotes in the neighborhood.

Am very fortunate to have several private lands to shoot...specifically 3 locations, with one allowing over 1k in distance.. being my favorite, most accessible at any time and most secluded I decided to do it right and put up a shooting house, with the works.

Unfortunately my playgrounds are governed by crops, so when it's summer my distances are drastically shortened till the crops are down. At another buddies land we put up a pavilion to keep us shaded and enjoy some rimfire and pistol during the summer out to 325 yards. It's been a tradition with my nephew when he is back from school in the summer, I enjoy the range time with him...eventually, soon he will be moving away,.

I ended up joining a private club, key card entrance only..that goes out to 600...it'll work for the summer and I prefer visiting towards the evening when attendance is usually null.

Honestly not a big fan of public ranges.

Crowds bother me and unsafe shooters scare me. Glad I am able to target shoot on private acreage. only drawback with unincorporated/rural locations is if a medical emergency should arise and cell phone coverage is spotty or non existent. Guess in that type of situation a sat phone would be a good investment.

Go in pairs, always in remote country, someone can call for help or take out the injured or sick man.
