shooting after rupturing eardrum.

Last week i ruptured my left eardrum due to a bad ear infection. I already have 80% hearing loss in my right ear and my left ear was my "good" ear. right now i can barely hear out of my left ear and there is a constant loud ringing in it. The doctor said it should go away and that i should avoid shooting for a while and should wear double ear protection. I have always used earplugs when shooting except when i am hunting. Who has had this happen and did your hearing come back? If it doesn't i need to get hearing aids which doesn't sound good since i am only 29. What kind of hearing protection do you use?

It is not uncommon for young children to blow out an ear drum due to infection. The ear drum will heal in a month or so and your hearing should return. Personally I would stop shooting for at least that long.

Foam ear plugs...deeply/properly inserted with gel ear muffs while shooting/on firing line. I have been diagnosed with severe high frequency hearing loss since i was 14. I finally gave in and got aids at 52:rolleyes:. Protect what you have!!! I use hearing protection for any loud noises...even vacuuming the floor.

I work as a industrial mechanic and have to wear hearing protection all day at work and have to take a yearly hearing test. so far i haven't lost any hearing in 4 years. but i am diligent about using the highest nrr rated plugs available. i ordered some electronic muffs and will use them with ear plugs.

Probably a good idea.

It's not just a 'good' thing to do, it's mandatory if you are trying to preserve your hearing. A GP has basic knowledge for sure but as BenPerfected responded, going to the doctor that specializes in that field is the way to get an experts answer.

My right ear drum was ruptured in Vietnam. It didn't affect my hearing. It wouldn't heal up. They finally had to surgically repair the ear drum I think it's when you damage the middle and inner ear is when you are in trouble. The ringing in your ear is a different matter. My ears have never quit ringing since I left the service.

Who determined the 80% loss in your right ear? You don't wear a hearing aid in your right ear? Your employer sends you to a GP for a hearing test? You need to be evaluated by a ENT doctor/Audiologist.

Sounds like tinnitus, I was never in the military but everything I did when I was much younger was LOUD. I had loud cars, I worked around loud machinery, I shot loud guns, and listened to loud music. I used to be able to hear a fly fart in the next room, now if it was sitting on my shoulder screaming at me, I'd go huh. I don't know if my former lifestyle (everything loud) caused it or not, but I have a constant buzzing in my ears. Sometimes it's almost like a whooshing of air, sometimes like thousands of chirping insects. Most claim there is no cure for it yet, others claim it's not ear related but originates in the brain (might explain a lot). But the intensity of it varies at different times of the day, it seems to be its loudest later in the day.

when we do our yearly test a doctor does the hearing test. they have a room set up in the back that is sound proof with the headphones and clicker. According to there test i have lost all of my high frequency's and most of the mid range in my right side. No i do not wear a hearing aid on the right side. IF i put a ear plug in my left ear i can hardly hear people talk with the right.

Visit the VA, hearing loss due to service connected issues are covered. Hearing aids ect, I know, just got hearing aids from service connected issues today. jeff

I've torn an eardrum twice due to infection & it healed both times.

Seems to me what you have to avoid is the same as for any wound - doing something that will tear the bugger apart before it heals fully, so your call.
