Thanks all. I'm not exactly sure where they were. It might have been Desecheo, his wife posted a picture the day before the tragedy and it kind of looked like that but not sure.
His wife especially feels guilty. She said "I thought he was right behind me, he was such a strong swimmer and experienced, but when I looked back he wasn't there." She feels like she should have been able to do something.
I understand they've been given a big bill for the search and recovery. That is just terrible on top of it.

Very sorry to hear of the loss of your friend. It can certainly happen quickly.
After the Navy and diving all over the western Pacific islands, it was from reading about the severe and dangerous underwater currents that got my attention long after the fact. One diver related a story that he was spear fishing at 60' depth, and before he realized what was happening, he was at 230'!
He of course lived to tell the tale, but it sure illustrates the unseen dangers related to currents in the oceans. Not sure if this fellow suffered any lung expansion injuries, but that would have been another consideration.
