Shipping solutions

I have a question with regard to this one. I was under the impression that you could ship a rifle or shotgun, not a handgun, to yourself with out using an FFL. At least I'm sure I could a few yrs ago. Has that changed, or is my memory faulty.

I believe you are correct.

Hi guys, new poster to the forums, anyone have packaging solutions for shipping a rifle and spare barrels?
plastic pipe makes a good package for barrels. get a couple caps and glue them on. id ship them seperate from the firearm. MY local post office at first told me they couldnt ship a firearm first time i tried it. I told them yes you can--they himhawed around awhile and finally figured out i could. Guess i didnt even need to tell them what it was. no handguns though. Downside of shipping handguns through UPS/fed ex is it has to go overnight and is typically 50.00+ one way.

You can, though I am not certain if "not a handgun" is accurate. I would have to research that before being certain. For long guns, at least, I am certain you are correct.

I ship barrels in PVC pipe tape the end then take electrical tape round the barrel to make fit in pvc pipe, then cloth in the ends, then tape, but a cardboard tube works too I get those at work from steel shipments for free

You can also use, if necessary use a long triangle shaped box that Fed Ex carries(?) for shipping golf clubs. Works perfect. Last time I used one of those boxes was a couple of years ago so, I don't know if they still carry them.

USPS has one called a document tube for blueprints, etc.

Make an account on USPS.com. Buy your postage online after entering dimensions, weight, and shipping address. Print it at home, tape it to the box, walk into the post office and lay the box on the counter and walk out not having to talk to a single worker.

Actually the PO has a form to fill out. I have no hassle with em.. BUT, why is the PO shipping his firearm? If it is for repair, then he can send it from the PO..

Otherwise I found this on the ATF site

"Under Federal law, an unlicensed individual is prohibited from transferring a firearm to an individual who does not reside in the State where the transferee resides. Generally, for a person to lawfully transfer a firearm to an unlicensed person who resides out of State, the firearm must be shipped to a Federal Firearms Licensee (FFL) within the recipient’s State of residence. He or she may then receive the firearm from the FFL upon completion of an ATF Form 4473 and a NICS background check. More information can be obtained on the ATF website at www.atf.gov and http://www.atf.gov/firearms/faq/unlicensed-persons.html. The GCA provides an exception from this prohibition for temporary loans or rentals of firearms for lawful sporting purposes. Thus, for example, a friend visiting you may borrow a firearm from you to go hunting. Another exception is provided for transfers of firearms to nonresidents to carry out a lawful bequest or acquisition by intestate succession. This exception would authorize the transfer of a firearm to a nonresident who inherits a firearm under the will of a decedent. See 18 U.S.C. 922(a)(5)."
