Shipping solutions

Hi guys, new poster to the forums, anyone have packaging solutions for shipping a rifle and spare barrels?

well the UPS stores won't touch anything pertaining to firearms if they know it.

what i do is buy a cheap rifle case at bass pro, a bunch of bubble wrap and moving boxes at lowes. make my own box out of a couple or 3 of the moving boxes. wrap the gun case in bubble wrap till it is a tight fit in the box. stuff any voids with bubble wrap. Take it to the United States Post Office, insure it and ship it. Never had a problem.

another option in addition to what richard said is to tell them to go get that gun case out of the back and leave it in the cardboard box. turn it inside out and tape it up and ship out. I been doing it that way with cheap walmart cases for a long time.

oh by the way,,we help people with shipping stuff,,they pay only what it cost me,,you help people, they will remember you,,

did you tell them it was a firearm, you can do it ,if going out of state has to go to a ffl, with all these problems we are having today, please go to a FFL you can work with and do the right thing

oh yeah
always ship to an FFL
shipping a firearm ups is a real pain. have to go to the UPS facility with all kinds of red tape.
but with USPS no problems.

Hi and welcome! I'll address the "packing solutions" . Loose barrels can cause damage to other contents or remove themselves from packages altogether when the gorillas throw them around. I use bubble wrap and lots of good tape around the barrels to protect them and keep them from moving around. My favorite is foam pipe insulation taped well. The kind that's split down the side, found at Home Depot, Lowe's or any plumbing store.

foam pipe, good for all kind of stuff,,comes in different diamaters

Before shipping a firearm I always require a copy of the receivers FFL and verify that the firearm is being shipped to the name and address on the FFL. A returned signature card is also required.

May want to ship barrels separately. They obviously don't need to go to a FFL. If barrels are less than 24 inches, can ship multiple barrels in the cont. U.S. using a 24 inch long large Priority Mail flat rate box for $18.90. Can ship up to 70 lbs. in a single box. The above large flat rate box is 12 inches wide so shipping up to 3 or 4 barrels in a box would seem reasonable.

There is no reason to ship FROM an FFL.

go to your local UPS store,,fedx mail box ,post office,,tell them your shipping a firearm, see what they say,,NO,staples won't do it,,you have to go direct to a UPS distrabution center
hopes its close by,,

As a private individual, shipping a rifle, you must ship to an FFL premises address. As a private individual, you are only entitled to his Licenses number not a hard copy of his licenses. Obtain his number, look it up on FFL EZEZCheck to verify, and ship to the address, if his Licenses is current. You do not need an FFL on your end to complete this transaction. LDS

Yup. Larry's right. Gone are the days when an FFL will hand you a copy of their license or send a copy to your seller. Here in Delaware, that ended about 2 years ago. Some of my sellers have "resisted", maybe thinking I'm a scammer because I can't do it the old way. I send them the link to my FFL store and a phone number. They get what they need from them but I don't think it's a full copy.

BATF does not want random copies of a dealers FFl floating around. As Larry stated, just get the dealers number and plug it in FFLEZCHECK to verify, and ship to that address.

I prefer USPS, as it's more convenient being in town. When you drop a package off, they can only ask you “Is there anything inside the package that is liquid, fragile, perishable, and potentially hazardous, such as lithium battery or perfume?” Nowhere are they allowed to ask otherwise, nor do you have to answer.

I wish more people would accept this as the right answer. I get tired of hearing "we need a copy of your FFL". --Jerry

One time, at my local USPS, I was refused service upon shipping a rifle, but the Postmaster made the counter person try to call me to apologize for refusing service to me. Since that time, at that location, no problems.

Various carriers, or rather their counter agents, will try to refuse firearms shipments, either through ignorance of their own regulations, fear, or a personal agenda against firearms.

The "shipping stores" do not take firearms shipments, but that is the policy of the stores, not the carriers that will ship such shipments This is a secondary issue. There is still no need to ship FROM an FFL, when shipping TO an FFL.

I use a UPS store for my address--no need to spread your home address over the internet. They are good people. They like my shipments of powder, bullets, barrels, etc. They tell me they can't ship firearms from the store, but you can take it to the local ups office (UPS Stores are franchises). UPS rule. But UPS does ship firearms last I heard.

Although I really like my UPS store, I have to point out that their rates are very, very high. You're always better printing your postage online and dropping it off there whenever you can.

I took my Sig P320 to the FedEx location locally with Sig's label and instructions to get the upgrade done and when I walked in with it in the Sig case the woman at the counter said "is that a firearm", I said "yes", and she said "I'll take care of it". She found the box that it fit in, sealed it, labeled it, gave me a receipt with a tracking number, and I thanked her and left. I don't know about shipping a rifle through them, but in my town they have been very helpful every time I've shipped anything, but then so has USPS here as well. UPS? Wellllll. Let's just say I don't care much for them.

I have a question with regard to this one. I was under the impression that you could ship a rifle or shotgun, not a handgun, to yourself with out using an FFL. At least I'm sure I could a few yrs ago. Has that changed, or is my memory faulty.
