Shipping Rifle To Board Member No FFL

Shiraz, a local retired police chief was busted by the ATF a few years back for selling to out of state persons. He had no FFL but was at local gun shows and flea markets selling his "personal collection." According to LE friends of mine who actually defended the ATF (imagine that!), he had been warned repeatedly for selling, in person, to out of state people. I know him on a casual basis and he told me that the "old guys" in ATF just gave him a wink and a nod but the new guys didn't respect his years of service. I guess he felt the laws didn't apply to him. A high dollar lawyer kept him out of prison but he paid a large fine and can no longer own firearms. High price to pay for, in his case, arrogance.

Informative. I did not know that you did not need a FFL for both ends of the transaction. Shows how many firearms deals that I have done! :o

You don't (in most states).

Here's the rub - some FFL holders will not accept a Firearm shipment from a private individual. Most do, but some don't so ask your buyer to check with his FFL holder if he/she accepts a firearm shipment from an individual.

And the reason for this, is that some are unwilling to supply a photocopy of valid I.D. A FFL has to be able to record where every firearm came from. As usual, documentation is must! No valid I.D. from seller = this firearm is 'dead in the water' and going nowhere! Now, everyone is pissed! The buyer, because he spent his money and has no firearm, the seller because the FFL won't transfer it, and the FFL for having to put up with the hassle , + he has a 'hole' in his Bound Book. And in the area where I'm at, $25-$30 is the norm for a transfer,,,,,, hardly worth the potential hassle. A good reason to form a 'working' relationship with your local gunshop/gunsmith. Buy some from him, support his business, and he's more likely to be willing to accept a firearm shipped by a non-FFL and do the transfer. FFLs who won't accept from private individuals aren't 'bad' people,,,,, they just don't want to put up with a bunch of bull crap for a little bit of nothing.

I know the word "except" or "except for" is there somewhere after "shall not be infringed", I just can't find it there, but I'm positive it's there. Can anyone please help???
