Shipping container as a Shooting caben built to suppress sound

Back in the day, we used to line the internal walls of speaker cabinets with roofing shingles to dampen reflections and standing waves. It would certainly look weird covering your nice walls but I think we're already out-of-the-box on this project.

Back in the mid 80's I had neighbors a bit too close so I took two of the 55 gal steel drums with the band on lids. I cut an 8 inch hole in the bottom of both drums, packed the inside with egg crate foam with a 10 inch tube of concrete wire mesh core formed down the middle of both drums as they were banded together. It was about 6 ft long altogether mounted on a simple wooden 2x4 frame at the end of the shooting bench. I'd stick the barrel inside several inches to fire.

The first version I did with the paper backed fiberglass attic type insulation but it took forever for the fiberglass dust to settle enough after firing a shot. The foam lining worked much faster.

It was very effective but had a distinct sound, like a big firecracker underwater.

Makes me smile to think back on that.

here is the executive summary, excerpted from riflewomans' referenced mil doc:

"... compared the rifle range noise reduction of barriers and partial enclosures.
The barrier was a wall located behind the firing line, and the partial enclosure was an open front shed with the firing line located within the shed. Results of the experiments showed that the shed did not outperform the rear wall..."

... due to the directional nature of the muzzle blast

Interesting stuff...
