shipping a rifle today - agrivation

shipping a 40x to a member on 6mmbr, experience today

FedEx, got there, i had it boxed, all paper work, processed the order, insurance, invoice, then "oh" this is a gun, we can't take guns at this location, you need to go to the regional office in Mary Ester, Fl 18 miles away. WALKED Out after asking why when I clearly indicated it to be a rifle, did they waste my time processing the order/insurance etc. before saying no can do?

UPS, exactly the same story, except the regional depot is in FT Walton, 16 miles away. walked out.

US post office across the street. left the box in the car, walked in and asked would they ship it, --SURE WE WILL"
so out to get the box, and guess what they actually took it insured it and smiled while doing it. tracing # indicates Tuesday delivery -
mildly frustrating - got is shipped the insurance more at the PO but the shipping about the same as FedEX

For all my shipping, I try my darnedest to ignore UPS and Fed-Ex!
Mostly, I use USPS Priority with free boxes and for things like cases to get annealed, it is $5.85 with tracking!
Sent my N-F scope for warranty work----USPS Priority. Sent my barrel and action to Ohio for work, USPS no hassle

FYI
This issue has been discussed here a bunch.
The boxing stores have a universal policy of not accepting at time any firearm parts either rifles to stocks to scopes.
For a firearm the best way to ship it either go to the shippers hub in your area or the postoffice.
Or pre print label for upsor fedex and ask for a pick up at your residence.
This will prevent any frustration on your part in the future..

I ship something almost every day. 90% of it goes by USPS Priority or Regional Rate. I also occasionally ship a long gun and it always goes by USPS. No problem, no hassle, get a tracking # and insurance. They know what it is because of the box size and shape, but they never ask. A friend who is an FFL both ships and receives uses the same PO and never has a problem. In the past 10 years I have shipped countless packages by USPS and FedEx. I have only had a problem twice. Once with FedEx a barrel was lost forever. I had a little problem collecting on the insurance, but I got it. The other time I made a mistake on my own return address zip code and the person who sent what I was buying saved himself a couple of $$ by mailing parcel post then lied to me about it. The package was lost forever. Never, never, never send anything of value parcel post. It is not tracked and when it's lost nobody cares.

GStay,
The local fedex standalone store is usually good it's the UPS,USPS, FEDEX box, mailbox place are the pains.
They are usually contract stores and not part of the main orginazation.

Only reason I don't like USPS is man they are rough..I think a pre requirement to work there is you have to be at least a semi professional wrestler and be able to throw 20 pound package 60 feet shot put style. Upon being hired you better bust at least 3 boxes a day lol. If its boxed right itll make it I had a guy from here send me a rifle in a boyds stock box with the scope off the rifle.....it was in reallllly bad shape when I got it and 6 months of battling with usps I gave up....UPS gets my vote and I learned just like you did I have to go to a regional office

I had exactly the same experience a couple of years ago. The local PO is very friendly and helpful without the crap. As for shipping as mentioned, it's very important to double cardboard the outer walls and even add more on the inside of the box and then use a lot of reinforced packaging tape IMHO. My ffl received a rifle for me with the barrel sticking out the end of the box and the crown all scuffed up. INSURANCE is important also
Take good care all

Over the years I've shipped 6 rifles via FedEx taking them to the local Kinkos', and have never had a problem. UPS "package" stores, locally will not take anything firearms related. Several high dollar scopes have also been sent to buyers and the manufacturers for repairs. Everything went well.

USPS is used for small items, priority mailings, but their tracking system leaves a little to be desired.
