Shilen Select Match

Guys above, why would you not buy them directly from shilen?--availability??
Because the barrels are +25% cheaper to buy from a vendor that orders in bulk from Shilen that you ordering directly. I have made the trip several times to the Shilen Swap Meet in the past and got some great deals directly there. Got to meet Ed the first I went and he did the tour. Haven't made it to the new shop yet. One day...

did not know they were that much cheaper

I ordered directly from shilen, Jim at northland is a little cheaper, 12 weeks thru shilen northland 4 mo. for savage prefit
Northland generally maintains a decent inventory, and is often able to ship immediately. The Shilen Select Match 6 Creedmoor barrel I order Monday will be delivered tomorrow.

he is a great guy to talk to, if your wanting something not in stock he will give you good faith time estimate. buying his trued barrel nut and lug is a must, factory nut and lug are stamped pieces of junk.

My go to barrel is the Shilen Select Match. Built a bunch of M24 riffles for National Guard units, (If that State did not have an infantry division, they could not get them.)
The Select Match was great in that application.

For what it's with, I shot for about 6 years IBS shorrt range with only a 6PPC. 2 rifles, all Shilen barrels. I was competitive. I then became in involved in other matches from 100 to 1000. About that time I started shooting a pair of 6 BRXs with Bartlines. Through about 16 of them and a few Krigers never had a bad one, had one that was probably a hummer. Shot every one from 2000 to 2500 rounds. A couple of years ago I decided to try a Shilin in a BRX. It was very accurate, just like what I had been using. But at 1400 rounds it was toast. I have always heard cut barrels would out live button barrels. In this one instance that is how it worked out for me.

I will be shooting my New, 6 XC Criterion, Heavy Sporter, 1-7.5 twist, 24" barrel with, 87 V-Maxes to start "break in" of the barrel and fire forming New Brass, to fit chamber,.. TODAY ! Tomorrow, will do, load work up for, the New 108 gr. Elite Hunter, Berger's. MY pick for, a "Jump" tolerant bullet that, I can use on, Coyotes, Deer, Antelope and Steel Plates. The gun weighs, 9.5 Pounds and balances,.. NICELY !
I have, a lightly used ( low round count ), Tapered Varmint 26", .815 dia Muzzle, PreFit Criterion, RemAge barrel, in 6 XC to sell that, wouldn't fit, in my "Sporter" stocks, barrel channel for, $195.00 plus shipping if, anyone's "looking" for, a Barrel, without, the 20 Week, WAIT !

6 XC Shooters NOTE; I loaded, 40 - 41 grains of, IMR 4350 with, the 87 V- Max @ .025 "Jump", ( .104 FB ) COAL of, 2.570", in New Norma Brass, and the load is shooting Sub, 1/2 MOA ( repeatedly) on the Cold, Windy, high Desert of, Idaho. ( Frozen, Cheek weld and Fingers ! ).
My load of 40.7 grains of, IMR 4350, Chrono'd 3,205 FPS, in a 24" bbl. Always work up,.. CAREFULLY !
@ JEFFPPC,.. I had heard/ thought that, Shilen Barrels, have ALWAYS been,.. Button Rifled ?

For any 6 XC shooters, wanting to try, Winchesters StaBall Powder with, the 108 Berger, Elite Hunter, Bullets,..
I started at 39.5 grains with both, Win and CCI primers and got up to 41.3 grains ( Close to Max for MY gun ).
Chrono'd 2,975 FPS out of, my 24" barrel and shot, sub 1/2", "Cloverleaf's" at, 40.7 grains (2,905 FPS ) and at, 41.3 grs, Jumping bullet .045, using, Norma cases. Hopefully, "Bugholes" coming from, my New Criterion Barrel as, I play with seating depths of, this bullet ! The EH is a Hybrid design, Bullet and "Jump's", nicely ! NOTE; My first try at .025 off lands didn't shoot well at, the higher charges !
I LOVE throwing charges of, Ball Powders ! Again, "work up", CAREFULLY ! I used 6 Creedmoor loading Data that's available on Hogdon's reloading site and backed off, about 3 grains from, suggested starting load then, worked up, in 1/2 grain increments til' obtaining desired Velocity and pressure on, the base of, case ( expansion was, .469 at the .200 dim). Had slight "cratering" of primers from my un-modified Factory, Rem 700 Bolt at, 41.3 grs.
The Primers were flat, but still rounded at edge ! PS; I still have, a 26" low rd count, 1-8 TW Criterion RemAge Varmint Taper, 6 XC, Barrel for Sale !

I have had, a Select Match Shilen, in .243 Win and it shot, great ! But these New, RemAge Criterion's are Sweet, too ! My 6 XC Cart. choice using, Norma Brass, Forster Dies, Berger Elite's / Hybrids, StaBall Powder and a Pre-Fit Criterion bbl. was, the "EZ Button" for, a great shooting,.. Varmint, Fun/ informal Target and Deer Rifle.
AND,. I didn't have to WAIT for 6 Months, to enjoy it !
BOTH, Barrels will, DO the "Job" and hopefully, they will become, MORE available !

I've been assuming Shilen's 'alternut' barrels are their regular 'match' barrels that have been contoured and finished.

FWIW - about a month ago I ordered a pre turned blank and it was shipped about two weeks later.

These 2 choices are not even in the same ballpark. Go with the shilen
And you know THIS ^^^ , HOW ????
You've, "tested", BOTH Barrels using, the same Cartridges / chamberings, Loads, Twists, Gunsmiths, etc.,..
SIDE by SIDE ???
The Inquiring Minds, of, Thousands of, very HAPPY, Criterion, barrel owners,.. want to KNOW !
Or, are they just,.. $325.00 Tomato, stakes ???

I do put a few barrels on. Ive seen shilens at matches. If they work for you thats good. Im glad we have so many choices. A guy gets mad when he has to pay for 2 chamberings.

I've had two Criterion remage barrels. The first one wouldn't hold less than 3 MOA [at 100 yards]. With 500 rounds on it, Criterion took it back and gave me a replacement. Replacement shot very well [for me that means getting some 1/2 MOA groups at 100 yards with a sling in prone - in this case, had a few that were just under 1/2 MOA] for a couple thousand rounds. Then, not so good.

@ Dusty,
Sounds like you or, a customer might have had, a bad experience with, a Criterion ??
I do think that, we have to separate "Match / Bench rest, quality" Performance from, a casual shooter's use, like me, that's happy with, Sub 1/2 MOA groups and, a sub $2300. Rifle. I was just curious about, what you've experienced with, the Criterion bbl's.
ALL, the components of my latest build ( HS Prec. stock, Barrel, Nut, Lug, Rem 700 action, Jewell Trigger, 6.5 x 20 scope, base / rings, etc.,. was less than 2,200. and,.. I'm havin' Fun.
Rifle's now shooting, in the 3's on my 2nd trip out.
@ jelenko,.. I'd be happy with 2,000 Rds of descent ( 1/2 MOA accuracy ) New Criterion Barrel's are, reasonably priced and I can, Fit them up, myself. Yup, I had heard that, Criterion's warranty was, "good".
