Shilen barrels?

I used a Shilen stainless select match for a 308 build. It’s been very impressive from day one.

A Shilen select 30 cal was one of the two best barrels I’ve had in 25 yrs of br shooting. The other was a 3 groove Lilja. Both 17 twist.

The world we live in is crazy when people do not know the great barrel makers that have been around for many decades like Hart, Douglas, Shilen, Lija.


I would not hesitate to run a Shilen, Douglas, Lija or Hart button riffled barrel if I decided to run a button rifled barrel.

My button rifled Benchmark is in .223 Remington Match chamber throated for the 80eldm. It will give you HM scores at 600 yards if you read the wind decently.
It's also only 26"

There is often a misconception that barrel makers are using the same fitting procedures that the top accuracy minded gunsmiths use. It’s basic business economics - for the low price they are swapping barrels they can’t waste any time or the profit drops quickly. As a young shooter I asked them to check the action and imagined Shilen would carefully measure alignment and let me know if anything needed correcting. Now I see that as something for a good custom gunsmith rather than the random low guy on the totem pole fresh out of gunsmithing school that’s swapping barrels and may or may not be hungover, or thinking about a hot date. Of the two barrels they installed one was an exceptional shooter and the other only shot 1-1/2 MOA and had to be set back and chamber recut.

Bang for the buck, Shilen‘s barrel install is a great value - I’ve really liked my Shilen barrels, but a good gunsmith is worth it if you’re really looking for the best installs.
