Shell holders

Last week I was reloading some used Fed. 308 brass. I'm sure they were fired out of a sloppy chambered gun because they were sizing kinda hard for me. Well anyway out of 50 cases 4 of them got stuck in the die. The case rim pulled out of the rcbs shell holder. What a big pain in the ass.
So I was at the gun shop the other day & picked up a Lee shell holder.
I didn't have any empty 308's but I had some 45acps to load so I used my new Lee shell holder.
Out of 360 45acp cases 5 of them wouldn't fit in the Lee shell holder but they fit in the rcbs holder.
Now I'm wondering if that's why the 308's got stuck in the die because of a loose rcbs shell holder.
Has anyone else run into this problem?

If they were range pickups I would use god old rcbs sloppy grease and a small base die.Y ou are not using enough lube more than likely. The 45 acp's on the other hand are a whole different problem.Mag tech brass is a real problem and I tried all my shell holders and none would fit their extractor groove so I tossed it.It seems that quality control in the last decade has gone down and the extractor groove's are not correct, they dont seem to care if they make them so they can be reloaded, but they function ok in the gun.

When my 308s won't fit in the shell holder it usually means the primer pocket won't hold a primer any more either. I've had that from a few rounds that blew primers after getting overly hot (left in the truck, in the sun while I pulled targets) or some load testing to find upper limits with powder/bullet combinations for which there is no data.

Never with brass fired from my rifle's chamber.

Buy some new brass and then only use only what's come out of YOUR rifle's chamber.

No I think my problem is that the rcbs shell holder is sloppy loose & that's why the 308 cases pulled out of the rcbs shell holder. And I'm using Hornady's one shot lube & rcbs full length die

Whether or not the RCBS shell holder is "sloppy", it's sole purpose is to hold the case while it's run through the cycle. It isn't intended to be a stuck case extractor. If the RCBS shell holder stripped the case rim from the stuck case, the problem isn't with the shell holder, it's with the die or the case or lack of lubricant.

I've had some shell holders that were really sloppy or really tight. Some of them can really vary. I even have Redding, RCBS, and Hornady for all my match cartridges because of the different fits. I pick the one that fits best for that lot of cases. Sometimes it is differences in case heads.

I'm trying to say that if I was using the new Lee holder (which seems to have a tighter tolerance) the cases wouldn't have got stuck in the 1st place. The cases went up in the die a little tight but then when I started bringing it back out the case just pulled out of the shell holder.
And for those that don't know 308 & 45acp take the same shell holder.
I'll just use the Lee for 308's & the rcbs for 45acp.

It is not the RCBS shell holder - there is supposed to be some play.

As another said, the shell holder is not intended to be a stuck case remover. It is most likely the one shot lube. A lot of people complain about stuck cases with it.

I tried it and gave up on it.

Yea but in my opinion the case should not slip out of the holder no matter how tight it is. The case should rip in half or the loader handle should bend in 2 first.
What lube is everyone else using?

Hah yea... Your press won't bend because you're not using enough lube, nor will ur brass split in half. It's your lube.... Oh and your "tighter tolerance" lee shell holder is likely giving you run out issues that you have yet to diagnose.

Abso-friggin-lutely... what he said!!!

I have to concur with the previous posters in that you don't have enough lube on the cases. I have some one shot lube and have found it to be pretty useless. I use pure lanolin or Unique Case Lube and that works really well for me.

The "slop" in the shell holder allows the case to float or move around and allow the case to self center in the resizing die. Your problem is case lube and the case binding in the resizing die and getting stuck.

Use another case lube, a good case lube creates a film barrier between the case and die and prevents the brass from rubbing directly against the die and binding.

One Shot Case Lube is the most popular reloading cartridge and tool lubricant in the market, because; Case Lube is a dry film “Boundary” lubricant that is non-hazardous, does not contaminate powders or primers, and the “DynaGlide”™ technology exceeds US Military & NATO load carrying capacity requirements by 6 times. Precision shooters appreciate One Shot Case Lube’s clean, non-sticky, quick and easy application when loading large volumes of rounds at a time. The flexible all-purpose dry film lubricant use on their other reloading tools is a major bonus.

New dies or rough finished dies will scrape the "DRY FILM" off the case and cause it to bind. A oil or liquid base lube will allow the case to float on a film of lubricant.
